Nankoweap - October 13-18, 2012
Just got word my permit was approved! That means there are five spots open for a six day extravaganza on the less-traveled North-East side of the Canyon. Trip is planned for the second week of October - 13th thru 18th.
Going to try this as a loop rather than an out-and-back. Planning to go in via Nankoweap Trail and exit via the Marion-Seiber route. Along the way we'll visit the Granaries, Kolb Arch, Mystic Falls, possibly even Nankoweap Mesa (if we can figure out how to get up there (I hear the trail up is elusive...)). Anything else of interest can be explored as time (and interest) permits. Itinerary is in flux until enough input is received to be considered consensus.
Gonna cross-post this on a couple other sites to generate as much interest and participation as the hiking police will allow...
PM if interested and I'll provide additional details.

Re: Nankoweap - October 13-18, 2012
Dang - I would love to go but tax season doesn't end until 10/15
Hope to get to Kolb Arch someday. I submitted for a R2R2R backpacking trip for the end of October. I strongly advise camping up there the night before, getting an early start and getting to Nanko Creek the first night. A lot more pleasant than dry camping on Tilted Mesa.

Anybody can make a hike harder. The real skill comes in making the hike easier.

If this dovetails with my Fall Break, I'd be interested. Will check the schedule soon.

@PLC92084
Looks like fun, but I'll already be heading back to work the day you guys hike out. I'll start thinking of some nice spot messages to be sent on your behalf in case you decide you need to borrow it again.

@bart01
After the last batch of messages, the wife would likely be expecting quotes from Brokeback Mountain! Think I'll pass on the SPOT this time...

Re: Nankoweap - October 13-18, 2012
As I told Paul in an email, I'll be on the river. We take out on Oct 14. So, when we pass Nanko, it will be much earlier in the trip. We plan to camp at lower Nanko on Sept 23, and hike up Little Nanko. That is only the 4th camp on a 25 day trip.
Maybe I can hide some beer there for you. But I won't be able to tell you where it's hidden, is the problem, since you will be already doing the hike on the day we take out at Pierce Ferry.
Well, rats. I had hoped to do a good turn for you. But I have no idea how to tell you where to look for a hidden cache of beer, other than using the sat phone, and I am pretty sure that is an expensive phone call. I'll find out, though. Maybe I could use the phone. I will ask the guy who has it whether I can use it.

I will talk to the people who are helping me set up the trip, see what they say. They have a lot of experience caching stuff for hikers and later rafters to pick up.PLC92084 wrote:@azbackpackrOh.... we'll figure something out!! :worthy:azbackpackr wrote:Maybe I can hide some beer there for you. Just wanted to alert any interested parties... we had a cancellation today so there's presently an opening for anyone who's interested (and qualified, of course...). PM me if you have an interest and we'll work out the details.
