beehive on Camelback Mountain

Post by ScottShu »

Hi,
I'm doing a story on the wild beehive off the Echo Canyon Trail on Camelback for the PVCC paper (see picture). I was surprised recently to find out that it's been there for many years, and spoke to park ranger who said it's been there at least 13 years since he's been a ranger. Has anyone known of it being there earlier than that? Or know anything else about it?

Thanks!
Scott

I haven't seen that one but plenty of others around the valley. On South Mountain there was one near the tunnel in Hidden Valley. Another in Hidden Valley at the bottom of the rock slabs has an a-frame sign warning hikers on occasion. I've only seen the bees, not an actual hive. There was one at Wind Cave in Usery Park when I was there twelve years ago. They seem most common where water seeps in crevices or small alcoves.

Now if you want to see some snakes then hang out at the snake zone on Camelback. Almost always in the jumbled boulders near the top right before the major 90 degree left. I've lost count this summer alone of all the hikers warning each other

I saw a hive on S Mtn some time ago, in a small hole in the canyon west and below of where the huge cairn used to be.

I Geocache and I found one north of the 101 and Scottsdale rd. on State Trust Land right next to the cache I was searching for. It is in an old rusty 55 gal drum that's half buried in a small dry wash
Understand, when you eat meat, that something did die. You have an obligation to value it - not just the sirloin but also all those wonderful tough little bits.

Hey Scott, can you be more specific about it's location? Is this the one near the rock climbing routes above the Headwall?

Thanks for the responses! Nice hive shot, Joe.

It's just after the first handrail section on the Echo trail, about 1/2 mile up I think, to the right of the trail. Wish I knew the climbing routes better, but I think it would be east of the head wall.
