Some of us do, but unfortunately a lot of people in my generation have never even heard of J.R.R. Tolkien let alone read any of his books.Wiz wrote:Luckily we all know how how it ends! :!:kc7txm wrote:I agree, well worth the money and time spent in line to see opening day. This movie trilogy has me totally psyched. There has been no greater crime on humanity than the production of the original cartoon series. Just awful.
I have been a fan of Tolkien since child-hood and have read and re-read his books more times than I care to admit.
I can't wait for all three of the movies to be released, then to buy the inevitable box set of DVDs with directors cuts, outtakes, behind the scenes and the whole gammut. Probably top the $Fanklin platuea, but I don't care.

yeah, this movie rocks! It was an hour late starting, I didn't get home till 11:30 last night. I bought the DVD for the first one and the making of the movie is spellbinding. I wonder how long this second one will be-uncut-???????

I wonder why that is? I mean, the books don't lose anything with the passage of time - it's not like they become dated. Maybe a decline in reading in general?kc7txm wrote:Some of us do, but unfortunately a lot of people in my generation have never even heard of J.R.R. Me too! OK, you should be hip to this: Have you read the Lensman series by E.E. "Doc" Smith?olesma wrote: I have been a fan of Tolkien since child-hood and have read and re-read his books more times than I care to admit.
I have a friend who has already spent 50 bucks on versions of the first movie alone!olesma wrote:I can't wait for all three of the movies to be released, then to buy the inevitable box set of DVDs with directors cuts, outtakes, behind the scenes and the whole gammut. Yeah, when the first cartoon came out I was really hoping they'd do it right....WRONG!!!!! Had hoped for years someone would come along and do the trilogy the right way, but had doubts it was possible. Jackson has ended my doubts! Fantastic job! Gonna really be hard pressed to outdo #2 when #3 comes out, but I can hope!

Difference in media... You couldnt see a movie in medival times.. Reading was all there was... Alot more stuff happening in movies than in books...Wiz wrote:I wonder why that is? Another opinion..............
The movie was very good ( I have only seen the first one so far) but a picture is not worth a thousand of Tolkien's words. It pales. The book was far better than the movie. Far, far, far better. I read the Trilogy twice and I don't usually read a book twice much less three books. I don't think I have ever read another pure fantasy that I liked. Tolkien created something that has never been bested.

Agree completely! I first read the Trilogy in the late 60's and have reread it every few years since and don't expect that to change; the movies will be somewhat like the old "Classic Comics"; a very enjoyable few minutes and likely to make one want to dig out the real thing and be totally enraptured for hours and hours!BoyNhisDog wrote:Another opinion..............

Hmmmm...FIRE! How many pictures does that one, little, four letter word conjure up in one's mind? A thousand words? I can't begin to describe the mental pictures my imagination can build on the foundation of a thousand words....over and over and over again! LOVE! How many pictures does it take to convey the message in that on little word? Words paint pictures for the mind's eye to interpret....and the picture those words form in our minds this second may change dramatically in the next!ellehcim wrote: A picture is worth a thousand words!!! Read "To Kill a Mockingbird", in my view one of the best movies ever to come out of Hollywood. Then read the book and say "Thank you" to the movie for taking you there.

Well said Hooli. The pictures one's mind forms are more perfect and intricate than something put in front of your eyes by another source. Imagination is a very powerful thing. Maybe it is something that has to be developed.evenstarx3 wrote:Hmmmm...FIRE! How many pictures does that one, little, four letter word conjure up in one's mind? A thousand words?
