September 14th I will be departing Tucson in the afternoon to drive up to Page, Arizona. Will camp at Lee's Ferry that night and on the morning of the 15th I have scheduled Colorado River Discovery (http://www.raftthecanyon.com) to back haul 15 miles up the river where they will drop me just below Glen Canyon Dam, which cost $48 per person. This section of river is totally flat water, which any beginner can paddle. There are 6 NFS campgrounds along the 15 miles between the dam and Lee's Ferry that do not cost to camp at, they have vault toilets and fire rings. My main plan for this trip is fly fishing and enjoying the scenery, I plan on fly fishing Saturday and Sunday while verrrrry slowly floating back down to Lee's Ferry. Will take out sometime Monday and drive back to Tucson.
I have 1 extra packraft, paddle, and PFD should someone wish to join me on this trip, or if you want to join me and have your own kayak all you have to do is contact Colorado River Discovery and schedule yourself for the back haul service.

Sounds very cool. Too bad that I swim better and faster than I can maneuver a kayak

The backhaul is a very fun trip. I have done it before. Lots of petroglyphs!
I will arrive at Lees Ferry on Tuesday the 18th, so I guess I will miss out on meeting you. I'm going down the river, rather than up it! If you change your plans to stay until Tuesday, then let me know.

Could you provide any info on what river miles the petroglyphs are located at?azbackpackr wrote:The backhaul is a very fun trip. I have done it before. Lots of petroglyphs!

I thought you had already completed your GC trip? Is this your permit or a spot on someone elses trip you traded for?

Re: Packraft/Kayak Marble Canyon
Wow! Very interesting...Been a long time since I've fished Lee's Ferry and I've only seen the River at Lee's Ferry. Nothing upriver from there. I do not have any kind of boat. Can you float down in just a PFD and a wetsuit???
Might be hard to cast that way though. I am also not a fly fisherman, nor do I have that kind of tackle, although if I go, I might invest in some dry flies.....

What Rob said, about the 'glyphs. There is one place, though, with a lot of them. I can try to get the info for you. My own river trip is the one coming up, the one where we are launching on Sept. 20 is on my own permit. I entered the lottery Feb 2011, so have been waiting for 18 months. Last summer I went on someone elses private permit. Also last year I did guide school with NAU, doing the Diamond Down. That same month (May 2011) was when I also went on the backhaul trip in Glen Canyon.Azbackcountry wrote:Could you provide any info on what river miles the petroglyphs are located at?azbackpackr wrote:The backhaul is a very fun trip. Re: Packraft/Kayak Marble Canyon
I'm just not going to be able to pull this Trip off. I am too behind on things and need to stay home just a tad bit longer before I pull off another Trip. I have a feeling that I'm going to regret not being able to this one though. If you do another Trip like this, let me know....
