The poor fellow probably didn't realize what the conditions would be like, coming up from Goodyear.

Runner who died in Flagstaff was training for Colorado race

To describe John Greer as an avid runner isn't nearly enough.

The Goodyear man was an ultra marathoner and triathlete who died May 26 while training for a 100-mile trail run this summer in Colorado. It was to be his 10th time conquering the...

How tragic. I hate reading of active, athletic, fit folks (as this gentleman clearly was) who suddenly pass on, based on some previously unknown heart condition. I've read a number of eerily similar stories over the years and am always amazed that the condition never revealed itself at any earlier--and less life-threatening--stage. The decedent here had run multiple 100-mile races, triathlons, etc. You would think that there would have been some indication in all of the hundreds of training miles, race, and hikes that there might be an issue. If there is any consolation, it at least appears that he died doing something that he loved dearly. RIP.

I wonder how my folks who suddenly die of previously undiagnosed heart conditions regularly visited a cardiologist? Especially if you are an athlete, it should be a yearly visit ...
