I prefer a handheld GPS so far. I've been experimenting with using GPS apps on my phone, and I don't find it nearly as efficient to use. Everything takes four times as long because the lack of lack of buttons and a well-thought-out menu hierarchy. My handheld GPS also has much longer battery life and is more weatherproof. I figure the apps will catch up eventually, but patent and licensing issues are probably in the way.

I've been experimenting with Trimble Outdoors Navigator GPS app for iPhone (free demo version only, haven't upgraded to the PRO app for $4.95 yet). I've been impressed with it so far - beats the pants off my ancient Magellan Sport Trak. :) Does put a dent on the battery current consumption though. I've only been using it for South Mountain mountain bike treks so I can't comment about reliability in the wilderness...

PS. I'm getting the feeling that the Magellan, Garmin, etc. business model is about to be disrupted...

There's little doubt that a dedicated device such as GPS selling for more than $500 (in some cases) isn't going to be hurt by some of the versatile electronic devices presently on the market.

Not many people use (or even understand) most of the features on the present GPS, so these guys are going to have to re-think what the public needs, or actually wants (lower cost, intuitive, larger screen, etc.)
On every trip into the Superstitions, I find another Gold Mine. Today the mine was filled with Memories. I can not wait for the next trip.

I'd settle for intuitive and larger screen!
