Re: 2012: Rain, Wind, and Sun
Thanks for your concern. It's an unbelievable mess here, but no injuries or damage at my house . Probably get power in 7-10 days (a wild guess ). posting from my phone is pretty lame.

Re: 2012: Rain, Wind, and Sun
Glad to hear you are ok; my parents went thru Hurricane Charlie in Florida--it was a small storm but came ashore as a Cat 3 or 4 I believe ( at one time was a Cat 5 and due to hit Tampa area)/
I went over from Tucson and spent a week with them. No power in Florida in August--it was lovely. I brought my camp stoves, headlamps and gas cans, we got a generator and I spent most of a week nailing blue tarps over holes in many a roof. Proved you can survive in high heat and humidity without AC. We didn't see the National Guard until 5 days in. We could go into town to get ice bags and Verizon put up a temp cell mini tower deal. Had to drive about 40 miles one way to get gas for the generator and car. Quite the experience. Total days without power---11.

Re: 2012: Rain, Wind, and Sun
ironically, it's a day short of a year since the October snowstorm with the trees still in freen leaves. We were out for a week in that one. I'm glad the leaves turned earlier this year, or it would have been much worse. It was odd to see them clearing off the countless downed trees with a bulldozer. Almost every power pole is snapped and most of the transformers are blown. Lots of wandering the neighborhood and catching up with the neighbors.

I have worked the aftermath of quite a few big storms, including Katrina, for both my current and last profession...The devastation that storms such as that can leave is incredible and leaves you truly in awe of Mother Nature....Glad to hear you're doing ok Alex....

Re: 2012: Rain, Wind, and Sun
My folks in southern NJ were without power for a day or so, I think. They got it back pretty fast. Their house got cold and they were planning to go to a hotel when it came back on. They said the wind, with the oaks around their house, was bad, but it probably wasn't horrendous.
Now, when will the Peaks be buried in snow and Snowbowl open with natural snow? How about Sierra Blanca?

we're still looking at another week or ten days. They haven't even sent assessment teams to our area yet. There isnt a string of intact line more than a couple hundred feet long anywherein this township

Re: 2012: Rain, Wind, and Sun
I've been in touch with my friends and family in New England and the power situation is sketchy at best as many of them live in small communities. There's a lot damage from storm surge all along Long Island Sound because that water had NO where to go. I saw a video from Westerly RI (along the CT/RI border) and Misquamicut Beach showing extensive damage and tons of debris. Nearly broke my heart.
Now there's another Nor'Easter bearing down on the East Coast!!! What the heck???
Thinking back to other Nor'easters and very bad storms I'm remembering the ice storm of 1973. It hit on a Sunday about a week before Christmas and we were without power for almost a week. I was in High School at the time and we wound up having a three week vacation from school!

Gas rationing starts Saturday in the Northern half of the state. Most nearby towns (including us) no longer have water. We're toting water from the lake to flush.

Re: 2012: Rain, Wind, and Sun
My parents got their tv/phone/Internet back this morning. So they are fully back to normal though much if their town still has no power.
That ice storm spawned a movie by the same name. It was set in (and much of it filmed in) the town I grew up in.

@big_load
Have you heard anything about NJ turning away non-union power companies that have come from other states to help? Not that I'm starting anything about Unions, but it's made the news. Seriously??? In a Crisis? New York will be back to normal, before you even get your Power back....

They are allowing non-union labor according to an announcement I saw yesterday. They're being very cautious. Places where hundreds of people are living and working are deemed too dangerous for the crews.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s office trumpeted the same idea saying that the incident was caused by "likely confusion about needing the crew at that particular location" and had "nothing to do with being union or non-union workers."

Ya, I saw the videotaped News Conference today. The Governor said that the Crews were in Virginia, called someone up in New Jersey and were given some "bad information"....

Re: 2012: Rain, Wind, and Sun
Forecast for you folks in northern Arizona is for snow levels down to near 5000 feet. First real winter storm of the season to affect AZ?

I am hoping to hike Sierra Blanca (likely off trail due to a fire area closure from the "Little Bear" fire this past June) on Friday. I hope for good weather, but I wonder when we will get some rain or snow down in New Mexico's Sacramento Mountains?
