Maybe Hermit or Grandview combined with a Tonto segment ...

I agree with Cactuscat. If you want a day hike, check out Grandview Cave of Domes and consider making a loop around the mesa like the one I did a few weeks ago.

If you want to overnight, head down the Hermit Trail and stay at Hermit Camp or Hermit Rapid or Monument Creek. Lot's of options. I highly recommend branching out and seeing more of the canyon! :D

BA to Hermit on the Tonto, with about 3 camps along the way, (in order to really enjoy things.) Take a hike down Monument Creek to see Granite Rapids. It's only about a 45 min. hike from the Monument Creek backpacker camp to the river. You can camp down there too--it's gorgeous.

Tanner to the river and back is a nice backpack, too. Pretty steep. Take a couple nights at the river, or more, so you can explore.

@azbackpackr
I am applying for that exact BA/Tonto/Granite Rapids/Hermit trip for Spring ... can't wait!
Any suggestions on which end to start at, and why? I am leaning towards starting at Hermit and coming up BA ...

I agree with that, although I did it the other way. I would go down Hermit next time. Hiking to the river both at Hermit Creek and Monument Creek is nice, if you have the time. It's nice to take at least 3 or 4 nights to do this hike, if you like to have some down time, and have time to explore. I sure hate to rush--there is so much to see, so many places to explore.

When I did the hike I didn't hike to the river from Monument. I just recently hiked up Monument Creek FROM the river, while on a river trip. Went to the backpacker campground and back down to the river. Rowed Granite Rapid the next morning. What a rush! I really need to get around to posting up my river trip plus all the hikes I did during the 24 day run. Beamer Trail, N. Bass camp, Saddle Canyon, Nankoweap, etc.

Thanks for the sugestions, I think I'am going to do a trip from Hermit to bright angel with a side trip to the river by way monument creek. It says in the HAZ it 11.5 from hermit to bright angle. It will be an easy overniter so ill have plenty of time to explore.

Not an 11 mile hike by any means! That is for the Tonto section only and does not include the Hermit Trail or the BA trail parts!! It's more like 23 miles. Here, Preston shows it as 21 miles: http://hikearizona.com/x.php?I=4&ZTN=1448&UID=0

If you do it as a one-nighter you won't have any time for anything extra. Do it as a three nighter. Stay one night at Hermit Creek, one night at Monument Creek, and one night at either Salt Creek or Indian Garden. Since it's hard to get a permit to camp at Indian Garden, except in winter, I'd suggest Salt Creek or Horn Creek for your camp #3 but the water in those places may not be there or may not be very good. Good water at Hermit Creek, Monument Creek, and Indian Garden, and at the river.

Yes, but that is a much longer hike, because going down Boucher does take so long. You really do have to plan to spend two to three nights doing that loop. It's a fantastic hike, though.

South Bass is neat, too, but there is a problem as to access, due to the 4 wheel drive road to the trailhead which can become impassable in bad weather.

A much easier and quicker hike is Grandview Trail to Horseshoe Mesa. It's less than 4 miles down to the backpacker campground. However there isn't any water there, so you have to carry in a lot, or hike to Miner's Spring to resupply. It does make a good overnight hike, though. And the access is easy, you can just park at the trailhead.

What time of year do you expect to be going?

I"am thinking about a trip in late march. I guess I'll have to take a 3 day weekend.

Plenty of water that time of year, most years! You could also do MLK or Washington's birthday, although those short days sure make for loooong nights with no campfires allowed!
