Peter's Canyon/Tortilla Creek loop?

Post by te_wa »

not official, so not an "Event" (yet)

I was thinking of going up Peter's canyon from Tortilla Flat, staying at Kale Spring area (good water?) for the night. Then bushwhack/boulder hop down Tortilla Creek back to the t/h.

I've looked at pics and read reports. Although a challenging hike, it is possible to do both canyons without technical gear. One MUST be comfortable with scrambling, loose footing, route finding and fall potential.

this trip is going to be mid week, likely Tues-Weds and will be demanding 20 miles in just 2 days. if there are ANY interested, i'll post this as an "event".

so?

I just did Peter's Canyon from Tortilla Flat, but came out at the canyon intersection @ Peter's Trail. Very rugged- miles of rock-hopping, and a groin-deep wade after the waterfall.

I didn't think it was worth the risk of a fall alone in the wilderness to avoid getting wet.

I averaged under 1MPH in the canyon, spent two nights there (late start Wed afternoon).

If I had it to do over, I wouldn't go solo.

I hope you're young- I am hurting today.

i dont want to do this loop solo, but nobody has stepped up yet. it may turn in to 2 nights.

did you find water in the bed of Peter's (besides the pool)?

i also expect some wading in Tortilla.

Plenty of water- I don't think I traveled a mile between filterable pools.

If you're going to travel that loop, a second night would be prudent.

This sounds enticing, but I can't swing a midweek trip. :(

I would hike this route counter clockwise and you will find the upper part of Tortilla Creek very boring. :M2C:
Be sure to get out earlier enough to have a late afternoon meal at Tortilla Flat. :GB:

Their food isn't all that great but after this trip you will enjoy it. ;)

Totally can't swing Tuesday, and probably won't be in any shape to do Wednesday. If you started Thursday..... :D
