Do not enter?

Post by kingsnake »

A somewhat non-rhetorical question: You've hiked for (you what is) a fair distance and AEG, because you want to see something really cool, but when you get there you find out that the final section is blocked off by one of those official looking "Do not enter" signs. (Or words to that effect.) What would you do? :-k

It depends how much I know about the ownership/use restrictions. I generally comply with such signs, unless I'm confident that they aren't valid. (I've been a few places where people are in the habit of posting land they have no right to).

All depends on the circumstances. Amethyst mine seem to get a few visitors...

My answer would depend on if the "do not enter" is in reference to an area of public land or whether it marks crossing into private.

Alamo Lake Dam comes to mind. The only practical way to hike down the Bill Williams River is to walk past a gate with a lot of Homeland Security-inspired keep out signs, and down a paved road, and then a dirt road, until you get below the dam. But the state park people assured us that the many No Trespassing signs were only for unauthorized vehicles, and didn't apply to people on foot.

If there is a missile silo complex lurking on the other side of the fence, I would not cross.

Yeah, the probability of being shot is inversely proportional to my desire to enter an area ...
