El Camino in Feb

Post by RedRoxx44 »

If anyone is interested I can make this an event but thought I would mention it because of the permit requirements. I don't have a permit yet, I'm in the process. The loose plan is enter via Tacna off I-8 and Christmas Pass road to Tule Well. From there a short distance to the TH to peak bag Cabeza Prieta highpoint ( not the namesake peak) It's approx 9 miles one way plus the short climb but I'll prolly do it as an overnighter because it's a nice area, around Cabeza prieta pass. The hiking on the approach is easy but is sandy so isn't like it's not some work. Most if it's on closed management road. The peak bag will definitely be scrambling and route finding on decomp granite, which can be interesting. The studly can easily do this as a day hike and car camp it. If you overnite gotta haul water, it's a dry camp situation. The permit is free and I think Randal S wrote up some good info on here regarding that. According to my contact at the Wildlife refuge there are a few changes.

I plan to ask for a Fri off due to the driving, which will not be quick, not on that road, and is pretty scenic. HC and 4wd is needed due to sand issues. Christmas pass can be a little rough but is no big deal for most stock SUV's that aren't low riders.

I am looking at sometime in Feb or early March ( closures for the antelope March 15-June).

I'll keep an eye on this in case I'm out in Feb. March is a little more likely, though.

Ah, you know the guys who do like 30 miles in a day. Including yourself. I like inventing words to see if the grammar police will get me. Te- Wa---"Sierra Anchas" ;)

I'll keep an eye out for when you choose the date. I'd be interested in coming, but February is particularly busy for me.

Letty;

I'm intrigued by the possibility of getting back out to this area => http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=642

I'm trying to get my February biz schedule together to identify a 3 day weekend. Feb 1-4 is already booked by another obligation. What are your preferred target dates?

Randal

Probably more like the last weekend in Feb or 1st weekend in March. I haven't requested the Fri yet, it is our busy season so we will see.
