Another possibility is that someone else named "T. Roosevelt" carved it. Check the clerk of courts for area residents back then ...

Yeah, someone did suggest that idea. But if that were the case, I would have thought the historical society people would have known about it when I asked them about it. But who knows?

The final speculation is interesting. I think aspens should remain strictly non-partisan, but I guess not everyone agrees.
