Red Picacho

Post by Barrett »

Proposed Red Picacho climb for Saturday, January 12th.
A number of HAZ members including myself have stood one short pitch from the summit of this landmark of the western Buckhorn Mountains. It looks like only 20 feet of 5.7 climbing, which we all felt was a lot more fun going up than coming down without a rope. I can find no record on the web of anyone having stood on top, even though a real rockclimber would do this blindfolded.
I have all of my rockclimbing gear, but retired my rope several years ago, thinking these days were behind me (Oh, how I was wrong!). If someone can bring a rope (preferable a dynamic, but a static would probably suffice for such a short pitch) the rock is solid and I'm sure we can knock this one off. White Picacho is nearby and looks like a easy scramble, so if people want a twofer, that would be cool as well.
I know the area pretty well, including a 4WD shortcut that knocks close to 20 miles of the trip to the trailhead over taking Castle Hot Springs road from Lake Pleasant. I like early starts that include putting my boots on the ground as the sun comes up, but I'm flexible.

The past, the present, and the future walked into a bar.
It was tense.
