Hiking the Grandcanyon is always an awesome experience .....
My favourite hikes ( Overnights too) so far -
1) North Kaibab in Fall
2) Nankoweap.
3) Tanner - Little Colorado Confluence
4) Tonto Traverse(s) - The expansive view are always breathtaking
It would be nice to see if there are other great trails with inthe Canyon.
My personal favorite is the Grand View trail. It has a large cave in horseshoe mesa called Cave of The Dome. There are all sorts of mine shafts. There are really no views of the river unless you go down to to tonto trail and do the loop around Horseshoe mesa, which is a really neet 9 mile loop. I done the grand view trail in the snow twice.

OK Mary, when? I assume this is not a summer hike, how late in the fall is good? How many days/miles?
Nothing in my mind is a summer canyon hike LOL Swamp Point has the same access because of snow problems that Thunder River has. I remember meeting some fellows on Thunder River trail one year that were day hiking because their permit was for N. Bass and they could not get in to the trail head.
All the trips Robert and I have done in the area have been in Oct. Sept might be nice if one wanted to swim. A week in the area is not too much--lots to do and see. I like to take two days down and two out but it is makable in one day down. Hnak knows a not a trail way to get out if he was willing to show us. I would not want to take beginners but we took my Mom down there several years ago and on a different trip we took some guys in their 70s.

Do you mean the Modred Abyss route? It has been a few years since I did that one (with the Field Institute), but I'd be willing to try it again someday. It was a wonderful hike. We did it in August, the heat wasn't too bad, and we were by water most of the time so we didn't have to carry all that much with us, maybe a day's worth at the most. Great fun!!!
