the latest poll question: do you seriously practice LNT ethics?
i answered no because
a. i don't pack out my waste
b. i don't pick up after other people
c. i've thrown a few apple cores in the bushes in the past
curious what others have to say
where do you draw the line?

It sure makes me not hiking....

I had a friend who thought the same thing. He went missing on a deer hunt 35 years ago, haven't seen him sincecactuscat wrote:kind of pride myself on being able to find my way without one.

They had a 20/20 show last night on how a lady and some girls got lost in Death Valley in their car following their GPS in July!

Death Valley in July was the beginning of their stupidity.

Re: leave no trace
GPS is a tool. Use it if you want or don't. If you stay on well-defined trails then you probably don't need one but looking down at them from that point of use is ridiculous as well. If I'm on trail I use mine mostly for the data and not route finding. If I'm hiking off-trail, then why would I ever not use one if they are available? Sure I can get out a map and compass. I know how to use them if I need to but a GPS is faster and does the same thing in a more organized fashion.
I imagine some point in history people having the same discussion about the compass or the map. People will always think there is something less authentic when more technology is used. I just like to think that it saves me time to enjoy what I'm doing more.

Unfortunately this is not true. Even people with GPS still vanish without a trace.cactuscat wrote:Yeah ... people with gps never dissapear.
Since I usually stick to trails for the most part I don't carry a GPS although people I hike with do. I have a compass and take note of landmarks as well as carry a map.

What does GPS have to do with leave no trace? In any case, my GPS is a toy. My common sense keeps me from getting lost or getting into true trouble.....at least up to date.

I find the lack of respect people have for the soil to be a disturbing trend. Each foot step kills millions of our microbial friends. Re: leave no trace
So the Mrs. and I are hiking Spur Cross, doing a little loop across from the mine and connecting with the 7 Springs trail. We get to the top of the hill for a snack when I look down and see a thin plastic piece over a foot long in plastic kinda like a Slim Jim wrapper.
I pick it up when I hear my beautiful and articulate wife say....Dooofus, that's a catheter it goes up your pee pee and are you gonna eat with that hand?
Huh what the heck is it doing out here and couldn't they have taken it back?
