the latest poll question: do you seriously practice LNT ethics?
i answered no because
a. i don't pack out my waste
b. i don't pick up after other people
c. i've thrown a few apple cores in the bushes in the past
curious what others have to say
where do you draw the line?

Nah that was really one of her more scientific descriptions she has given me.
She was kinda hoping I would grasp what I was holding in my hand in less than 3 minutes.
Cuz I was just standing there holding it trying to figure out if I was gonna put it in my backpack or just leave it.
I chose option 2.

So I admit I'm not versed in these matters, but can someone hike 5, 6 or more miles with these things?

Re: leave no trace
Although dwarf rental horse catheter waste is a serious issue worthy of further discussion, I recently was made aware of a LNT issue and am curious what other members think.
I once posted a picture sitting fireside in "Skull Rock"
http://hikearizona.com/t2013/05/04/4539 ... 141-08.jpg
(Queen Canyon, KOFA), and a well respected HAZ member commented that some people have a problem with fires that leave soot on alcoves, etc.
At the time it did not occur to me that I was not LNT compliant, I always try to leave sites cleaner than I find them. The archeological record of KOFA goes back to 9000 BC, and Skull Rock looks like humans have been building fires in it about that long. I did not build the fireplace, but then again I did not tear it down either. It went down below freezing that night and the wind howled outside - I've never enjoyed a fire more.
Was my "fresh" soot a violation of LNT?

In the early days of LNT I was a certified LNT Trainer and this subject was never discussed.Barrett wrote:Was my "fresh" soot a violation of LNT?
Perhaps over time it has been added to the course but I would not be aware of it.
Added P.S. - Maybe it's ok as long as you don't draw arrows in it. ;)
I emailed your question to the LNT folks in Boulder and got an immediate response that the answer man is on vacation for the next two weeks. Therefore please standby...

The LNT answer man has responded and here is the body of his letter below:
Thanks for your interest in Leave No Trace. Our general guidance on fires consist of the following:
•Always check local rules and regulations regarding fires in the area you plan to have one.
•Only build fires when they're legal.
•Only build fires where conditions are safe, i.e. not too windy, dry, etc.
•Only build fires when there is a suitable wood supply, e.g. dead, downed wood no larger than your wrist.
•Minimize fire impacts by using existing fire rings, approved campfire sites, pan fires or mound fires.
•Avoid building fires where they may inadvertently damage natural features such as rocks, rock walls, live plants, etc.
•Monitor your fire and ensure that it is out COLD before leaving a fire unattended.
•Clean up the fire ring once done and remove any large unburned pieces of wood and scatter.
In regards to your specific question about fires in alcoves, we would recommend that fires not be build in locations where smoke or soot would create what would otherwise be avoidable impact to natural features.
Let me know if you need additional information or have further questions.
End of quote...
