Desert hiking info

Post by tonyb »

My wife and I will be taking our first desert hiking experience during the third week of April in the Wabayuma Peak wilderness area and was wondering if we could get some some info on what we should expect, or just any useful pointers. Are flying insects such as mosquitoes a problem in Arizona. Any info appreciated. We have hiked many areas east of Texas. We have been to Arizona a few times, but mostly have just passed thru.

It will probably be hot. Temps will be in the 90's unless you get lucky with a late spring pacific storm. Bring a lot of water, wear long sleeve shirts, and wear a large brim hat.

desert hiking

Insects shouldn't be much of a problem, unless it rains again before your trip. The only time flying insects are a problem is when there is standing water for them to breed in. So barring any rain, there should be few bugs. If I were you though I would hope for the rain and brave the bugs. Theres nothing beter than a wet-desert hike. Please, though, whatever the conditions are bring enough water with you. It never fails, at least once a year, someone from out of town (or sometimes, embarrassingly enough, someone from in town) goes hiking without enough water, and then we have to hear about it on the local news.

I'm sure you already do, but it's alway great to have a basic first aid kit and pliers or a multi-tool of some sort for pulling cactus spines or other nasties out of your self and your gear. Sounds like a fun trip...you will have to update us when you get back. Have fun and be safe!!

Long pants are a good idea if you might be going through any catclaw or other brush.
