It doesn't matter the news story, the Daily Mail always has the best photos. I often laugh that I go to a British paper to get the best photos of American news.

Outside has an excellent time-lapse movie of the fire in New Mexico. (It loaded a little slow for me, don't know if that's my problem or theirs).

I actually know someone who is on that fire. Maybe will hear some first-hand stories, if I'm lucky.

Hmmm, as these fires grow, especially the one near Sante Fe, I question my ability to hike some peaks in the northern part of the state in a week. Even if the national forest is not closed, I would rather not be smoked out for the hike. I canceled a Borah Peak (ID) climb in 2010 and went to Utah instead. It worked out well, so maybe if I have to cancel Wheeler and Sante Fe peaks, I'll do something else.

I just returned from a week backpacking in the Aldo Leopold. Although open when we went in, the section we were in was closed due to the Silver Fire while we were in (unbeknownst to us). Smoke was/is very heavy, especially first-thing in the AM - we were able to climb the (now defunct) Reed's Peak fire tower for a look-see.

Looks like the Silver Fire is still going strong, with conditions expected to continue to be hot, dry and windy today.

Saw a beautiful bright red sunset as the sun passed through the large Silver Fire's even larger smoke plume. It went behind the smoke and was obscured, but it was neat to see for a brief time. At dusk, I can see the origin of the plume on the other side of the San Andreas Range. Still appears to be putting up a large amount of smoke.

According to New Mexico news sources, the Silver Fire has now topped 100,000 acres. Inciweb hasn't been updated to reflect this, however. Due to a shift in the wind, the White Mountains are now blanketed with smoke from the fire ever since mid-morning today.

Here is a news video about the fire. Also discussed is the Jaroso fire:

They tend to run well behind the curve. (Doce not updated in 4+ days since it was 50% contained.) From what I read elsewhere, inciweb updates depend on the incident commander and/or his designated PIO ...

I like this site also although requires a little more digging---http://wlfhotlist.com/forums/22-IA-Southwest

Noticed Sycamore fire at 780 acres and 60% contained, not up on inciweb. That is a really pretty area hope sycamore canyon proper did not burn.
