Ch...Chi...Chi...Chia
So I've been playing around with my pre-long run diet the past month or so and stumbled upon this. Simply drop an electrolyte tab into a glass of water and then add a couple of tablespoons of chia seeds, wait 10 minutes, stir and drink it down. The chia seeds soak up the electrolytes and you end up with a jello like blob of electrolytes in your stomach that along with the chia keeps you fueled for a few hours.

Maybe it's just the way you describe it, but I don't think I'll try that any time soon.

Re: Ch...Chi...Chi...Chia
It's actually been working great on my long runs. Stumbled onto this from an ultra-marathon site and a couple of my friends that do 50-100 milers up in Idaho swear by it. This was the solution to getting me through long runs in the heat this past summer. Chia seeds are also the fuel of choice for the Tarahumara down in Mexico. Thought it was crazy at first too, then I tried them and was extremely surprised at the results.

I can believe it's effective. It doesn't sound too appetizing, though.

Re: Ch...Chi...Chi...Chia
When I'm working out I just view food & drink as fuel so I'm willing to eat almost anything no matter what it tastes like. My chia concoction is not that bad, the chia absorbs the flavor of the Nuun or GU tabs I use.big_load wrote:I can believe it's effective. It doesn't sound too appetizing, though.

After reading this I did a little research and now I gotta try it
I have some questions. Where do you get chia seeds? Other than with a little terra cotta statue
Can you buy them in bulk? Like at sprouts?

Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Costco all usually have them.

For everyday use I just throw a tablespoon or two into my breakfast smoothie. Only downside to chia seeds is that they stick to everything if you do not rinse out your glass really well. Can't get the little suckers off the glass if they dry.

If you can't handle weird textures, the chia blob is not for you. Chia seeds in a smoothie are way easier to handle

I preferred the Pet Rock, myself. Required less daily care. You could leave it for weeks unattended, and it wouldn't die of thirst or starvation. If you left it alone in the house for a week, you wouldn't come back and find crap all over the living room rug.

@Alston Neal It's no fun at all...I've found I can "cheat" with Seeds and Nuts a little bit. Downing a Chia Blob? Probably not...My biggest Nemesis? Popcorn...I really miss Movie Popcorn....

Re: Ch...Chi...Chi...Chia
I'm hooked
I've had a chia seed drink (3 1/2tbls seeds, 1 cup warm water and 2cups juice) for the last 2 mornings. The texture is a little strange but I like it. The drinks seem to keep me full and give a lot of energy throughout the day.
Thank for the info!!
