Flatiron Orange Paint Removal Project
Well if you haven't seen the Orange Arrows Leading up to the Flatiron in person you may certainly have seen photos of them. They are obnoxious and unnecessary. I decided to test out the removal of the arrows with a product I have used in the past called "Citristrip". It is a bio degradable non toxic stripper and seemed to work quite well. JohnLP came along on the initial test and we found that this product in a spray can, along with a good scrub brush and some shop towels to mop up the mess did the trick. In roughly an hour and a half of work we were able to eliminate 3 of them. That leaves 17 to be removed.
I would like to put together a small task force to finish the job.
The plan if weather permits is for next Saturday the 14th of December starting at 8am. We will need an additional 6 cans as we found one can works for about 3 arrows.
What to bring? Bring a pair of rubber gloves like you would use to wash dishes by hand. Some old shop towels to mop up the paint and a good scrub brush. Lastly bring a plastic bag to haul out the mess. As for the Citristrip I will purchase all the product. If you want to chip in on that I ask that you donate to HAZ instead. The Citristrip is 9.00 a bottle and without HAZ I wouldn't be able to post this event.
Let's meet at the Quick Trip on the corner of Idaho and Old West Highway. From the 60 it is straight north on Idaho a few miles at the south-east corner of Idaho and Old West Highway. Meet at 8am sharp. We will leave there by 8:20 and go get this party (oops meant project) started.

No firm plans yet but Tracey has that weekend off and we might go camping. If not, one or both of us may join in the party... er clean-up project.

Once you're done with that come on over to the west side and get rid of the blue dots in the White Tanks.

I'll be at Phantom Ranch the 14th but if theres any nasty orange arrows left after the 16th I'm willing to pair up with others and tackle it, good luck and :thanx: good karma!!
Re Flatiron Orange Paint Removal Project
you should remove the blue and white dots too. I am sick of people asking me if they are going the right way maybe if there weren't dots it would keep some of the extra newbie people away .

A response I received today from e-mail to Forest Service...
Hi Rick,
Thank you for giving us a heads up on the graffiti along the Siphon Draw trail, and your willingness to help us to remove the graffiti. Currently there is a group of people associated with Arizona Trail Association that are going up the trail every Saturday to work on removing the graffiti. If you would like to assist the group in their efforts please contact Mark Suban at 480-610-3300. Mark will assist you in getting a volunteer agreement to authorize you to help. The signing that you suggested is something that the Forest Service would need to do because the location and content of such signs would have to be in accordance with our wilderness regulations and done in conjunction with the Lost Dutchman State Park as most of the hikers on that trail originate from the park. Thank you for your interest in helping out and I hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to volunteer on the trail.

This is my gym. I have to travel down a bumpy road to get there. There are no treadmillls, no machines, and no personal trainers. I walk..I run..I breathe the fresh air. I can go any time I want, as much as I want and there is no membership fee.

 ....JJ3 do we have to sign waiver forms in case we spray the stuff in our eyes :roll:Rick Vincent wrote: Mark will assist you in getting a volunteer agreement to authorize you to help.
Also, it seems like we wouldn't be going thru proper channels...

Okay I have spoken with Mark Suban and I will take care of a blanket volunteer agreement for this project. Bob it's all fun and games until you squirt citristrip into your eyes. I can't be held responsible for that.
As for proper channels I prefer Fox News, Discovery, and the History Channel.
The Forest Service is Very appreciative of our efforts and Mark will be meeting us at Quick Trip Saturday morning as well. Plans remain the same!

I love what your doing :thanx: and I plan on being there. I've started pulling together supplies. I can't commit 100% because my work is a madhouse right now but I'm going to do my best. I've got a week to work on story on why I can work on Saturday

The group is getting bigger. Many hands make light work! We may even have time to hike to the top while we are at it!

I talked with Mark Suban on Sunday and told him what was going to happen. Mark is very appreciative of our efforts as they are undermanned and it would be hard to work this into a scheduled event. Hope to meet you and lots of HAZ'ers on Saturday
