Catalina death march revival? October
well seeing that this one died previously because of scheduling between various parties... i thought it might make sense to try to plan this one early and knock it out in the fall. anyone still interested?
October and November seem like the months most likely to work.

It can be side-stepped. It's just a rally point for the sake of having a landmark.

Re: Catalina death march revival? October
The woman who ran the place (affectionately known as the 'pie Nazi') died some months ago. I had heard that there were people trying to pick up where she left off, but I suppose it's possible she took that blackberry cobbler recipe with her to the grave - along with her talent for hiring young, attractive people who'd rather chat with the mountainbiker at the next table then bring you your burger before it had turned to a cold-roast beef sandwich.
I am truly sad - but, lets face it, there'll probably be something shiny and franchised to replace it eventually. How could that be bad? :yuck:

I'm attempting the RT version tomorrow (with a turnaround time set)...so I can say I tried during the summer..fall begins Tues.
I heard the official summit is behind a fence

Someone dumped the rock with the BM out onto a lawn nearby the boundary of the old radar station, so you should be able to approach it.rlrjamy wrote:That's an awesome offer. don't lose all hope... there are always some young creative and ambitious people that come out of the woodwork with a good idea (or good food). never say die! especially with pie!writelots wrote:The woman who ran the place (affectionately known as the 'pie Nazi') died some months ago. Re: Catalina death march revival? October
I'm planning on getting picked up at the top, and then shuttled down straight to El Charro's where a giant pitcher of margaritas and a carne asada chimichanga will be waiting.
You might consider doing Mount Kimball instead, either via Pima Canyon or Finger Rock Canyon tomorrow.

Re: Catalina death march revival? October
I'm planning to do at least to Romero Pass tomorrow and see how much time I have left.
I may do it 10/10 and/or 10/24 as I prepare for a "bigger" hike in Nov. I'll let you know.

Re: Catalina death march revival? October
El Charro's carne seca is unbelievable, but I'm a carne asada guy. I'm planning on staying with my buddy who just happens to live about 300' from the downtown location. Wendy if it works out that you give us a ride I'll buy your dinner @ El Charro (and drinks are definitely included or else it wouldn't be dinner).
I've been working out pretty hard and doing nice hikes once-a-week so I'm pretty confident about my fitness level. However, I doubt that I'm up for a 30-mile death march on the 25th because the Arizona Wildcats have a football game the day before, and there's no way on God's green earth that I'm not going to get boozed-up at the tailgate. My buddy John's probably going to do it with us on the 25th (if that happens...this trip is in a cosntant state of flux). He did Kimball with us, Stefan. Probably hitting the Pinals manana if anyone's interested.

Re: Catalina death march revival? October
i would imagine that the 25th is a go... there are a lot of maybes still there so i guess we'll see. not enough people commiting. i definitely want to do this and sunday is probably better since saturdays are usually a pain. as far as the round trip is concerned, only doing it if others try it. i'm not interested in that much pain by myselfJamesLyding wrote:El Charro's carne seca is unbelievable, but I'm a carne asada guy. Re: Catalina death march revival? October
My offer for the weekend of the 25th still stands. Be great to meet some of you bums, especially since I don't have to try to keep up with you to do it ;) .
Just dreaming of dried beef in a warm tortilla makes my mouthwater! I love Carne Asada, too, but there are actually a number of places that do it better than El Charro if that's your main meat. I have a restaurant for just about every Mex. specialty, including Menudo for those of you who are into that kind of stuff... The pork at Guadalajara Grill is amAZing, seafood at Mariscos Chihuahua, carne asada at some of the smaller places like Los Brazos or Maico...mmmmm. Gonna go get some dinner!

Re: Catalina death march revival? October
Waaaay off topic, but for my money the best carne asada is at Rigo's. They have this dish "Mucho Very Good" that's a carne asada chimichanga done enchilada style. Hmmmm.... Also the best Mexican buffet (lunch) that I've ever had by a huge margin.
Stefan, as to the 25th, count me in. My roommate is 95% in as is Spiker.
