Catalina death march revival? October

Post by sarichter »

well seeing that this one died previously because of scheduling between various parties... i thought it might make sense to try to plan this one early and knock it out in the fall. anyone still interested?

October and November seem like the months most likely to work.

James - I LOVE Rigo's, too. The Mucho Very Good is to blame for one of the worst food-comas I've ever entered.

Guero Canelo has very good Carne Asada, but the real star there are the Sonoran Hot Dogs.

Have you guys tried BK? Now THAT's good meat! The Caramelos....mmmmmmmm

We seem to get back to this Mexican food topic too frequently. Maybe we need to start a whole "where to eat" discussion board...

I make a mean asada, myself, so I haven't been getting around to the local haunts as much as I used to. :D

If I can go on this adventure, I'll work it out so that I go up the night before and leave a vehicle at the fire station or nearby and then get dropped off at Catalina in the morning. That way we'll have at least one more car up at the top. I have to see how things shape up...

whatever works. when will people know if they will be available? i know this is fairly far in the future, but it would be nice to know how people are going in early to mid october so we aren't scrambling to figure out transportation.

Stefan, I'm in 100%. My roommate and Spiker claim to be in 100%, but I'd put them at 95%. For the 25th, that is.
Jeff, where do you live in town? I'm planning on staying @ Spiker's pad which is about 200 yards due north of the downtown El Charro. Perhaps we can pick you up, and then roll up to Catalina State Park? We'll probably be rolling in my Maxima so we have room for 2 more people (that is, if 3 people don't mind sharing the back seat, and you're not a 6'9" 330 lb. manster who would preclude anyone else from sharing the back seat).

That could work. I'm on the way from there. I'll get back with everyone when I have a better idea what is going on with my schedule...

Jeff, you're going. What kind of vehicle are you planning on leaving at the top?

I will know for sure the week before (pretty much depends on how things go on the Canyon trip). If I'm going I can either make sure I've got a 4-5 passenger car up top, or my wife would be available to bring up the van.

Guys, I got some bad news yesterday from an MRI. I won't be able to make this one, for sure. Maybe everyone can get back down this way in the spring and we can all go gain some elevation together, then.

Oh man, that sucks. Even waiting out the few weeks for this type 1 AC separation is the suck.. longer rehab is really much, much more so :(

I take it that this time around no one really wants to go for a one day up/down effort on the 25th... early start, light load... interestingly long day?

i'm in favor if jim still gets a ride at the top. i should be doing the up and down earlier in october so i wouldn't be against doing it again if i survive the first round. you fairly quick on your feet? i wouldn't want to drag this one out too long... not the biggest fan of hiking in complete darkness.

I'm not up to doing the up-down in one day. I'd rather go up twice then go up-down, but that's just me. The ride from the top isn't that much of a concern to me because I'll be in Tucson the entire day before (maybe Friday night as well), and there's the possibility of bribing Wendy to give us a ride back from the top/ski area/Summerhaven.
Stefan, due to the shortening days there would be an exceptionally strong possibility of you hiking in complete darkness whether it be on the uphill- or downhill portion depending upon your start time.

yes... but i'd rather be hiking in complete darkness on the way up when i'm fresh and walking towards the daylight rather than on the way down, tired, feet in shambles, and about to collapse. that's just me though. :D

I'd normally take off early, putting in some uphill hours in the dark... my "normal" trail pace average is around 3mph over longer distances, but it really depends on the day and what has come before. I did Whitney a few weeks ago, climb took just over 5 hours with lots of picture taking...

... In this case I will be over in Tucson on the 18th doing Finger Rock Quad, which could beat me up, but with a full week to recover I should be fine. For me it is deciding whether or not to come prior to that weekend and hike with a friend, or to stay after the weekend and include this Cataline State park in the schedule as part of my training. First weekend in November I have a very hard day scheduled and this might be a nice lead in to that hike. If you're doing it earlier in the month, you may want to use the day for a different hike?

You're planning to go up and down Finger Rock four times in a day? To the saddle or to Kimball?
