2008 How much have you done this year?

Post by Jim »

I was looking over my History for this year and saw that I am already up to 154 miles hiked and over 50,100 feet gained and lost. I'm doing a much better job of tracking my hikes this year. Everything worth mentioning appears to be accounted for.

What are you up to? Now is your chance to brag. You know you want to.

I'm very happy with my year so far. Hopefully by the end of the month I will have my first 100 mile month and hopefully first 500 mile year.

That 200k in elevation is impressive. I'm at 554.45 miles and 124,935 ft but there's still a few months left.... : rambo :

My tally would not be impressive, even if I added in all the mountain biking. I wish my younger son were posting here. He has slept mostly outside since March, has worked for two jobs which required, at the first one, backpacking in AZ, and at the second one, horsepacking in UT and ID. Then he went to Moab and was sleeping in a cave. I think he has spent no more than 30 nights indoors since early spring. (Vaporman, this is the son you know.)

I'm surprised no one else has racked up anything close to or above my elevation gain. I guess its the summer heat that slows folks down. If hadn't done so much hiking for my vacation I don't think I would be where I am. In 4 days I did over 15,000' in Colorado. Whitney was an easy 6,000', and then I did a lot on the Peaks in August.

Problem for me now is keeping it up for the rest of the year. I was thinking that I could get up over 250,000' for the year, but I now believe that 220,000' is going to be a more realistic goal. This will be my big year, though. Next year I don't plan to take a 14er vacation or expect to have nearly as much free time to hike, since I expect to be in school again.

I'm mentioning this since it's funny how the numbers worked out. My current elevation gained for the year is 213,312'. 607 miles, if you count that.

Is there a way to look at the Top 10 for the year?

I still have a few days yet, need 21 miles to top 500 on the year. Never hiked 500 miles so that would be a new high for me.

I still haven't logged my AZ hikes this year, but I'm probably out of the running. I did most of my big hiking in CO and NM.

407 miles, dont know on the elevation gain(should have kept better track of it). Next year should be a big year for me, starting out with 40 miles at least in just the first week, then 2 weeks of backpacking in Alaska in June, thats almost 200 miles in just those two trips.

Too bad I got a late start hiking in AZ.....2009 though look for me being up there though : P....I'm gonna try and get at least 10 miles a weekend if I can help it (gonna be tough in the summer.....mostly fish creek, four peaks and drives to cooler weather).

Edit: Don't know if I can come close to Rally's planned year though ><

not really, I'm just guestimating :D

I know these guys are up on mileage
jhodlof
vaporman
wallyfarak
tortoise hiker
figure there's several more in that pack

I'm more into elevation than mileage. Unless it's really exciting I loose interest after about six hours. jhodlof must be well past 250k by now. I was really hoping to break 200k, just too much going on the past couple months

10 miles in the Supes in summer definitely can be done. Just start early and get out of there before noon. Summer is when I have most of my free time, being a student and all, so I am well used to early morning summer jaunts in the Supes. Though I do try to get up to the Rim and Flag a few times during the summer. Fossil Springs is a good summertime day hike if you dont mind the people, if you go on a weekday that actually takes care of most of the crowds anyway.
