Peralta HQ cave in Peters Canyon via Tortilla Flat - July 7

Post by DarthStiller »

I read about this in the Hiker's Guide to the Superstition Wilderness and want to go find it. From Tortilla Flat this is listed as about 5 miles RT, so the heat shouldn't be too much of a limiting factor. It's along the creek bed and some moderate boulder hopping and bushwhacking, according to what I read and what Wally told me. The advantage to the heat might be that there shouldn't be much water, if any, in the creek so there won't be an issue of wet feet. Anyone feeling adventurous enough to brave the heat in the Supes?

Glad you guys are ok!! I was :scared:
Thankfully it was a little cooler today than it has been. It's been over 115 the last few days. Did you get pictures of the caves?

Thanks for the pictures of your endurance run up Tortilla and Peters Canyon. The dry conditions remind me of why I used to take the summer off when it came to backpacking the Supers. My latest trip into the summer was to Reavis on the 20th through the 22nd of June to see the sunrise/sunset of the longest day of the year. Cooked on the way in and nearly froze at the ranch with only a short sleeve shirt to keep me warm. But that wasn't as bad as the 11 degrees we experienced at the ranch during the winter break of 1988 and 1989.

There used to be turtles in the pools of Peters Canyon. Looks like the draught or human traffic has reduced their population to zero. To bad. Hopefully they are still alive upstream and will repopulate the stream when the rains return.
