My First Grand Canyon Backpack

Post by cindyl »

I'm ready - and I got permits. Six, to be exact - so I need five more participants to make this a "go." In the Canyon on Nov. 5, out on Nov. 8.

So here is the plan:

Thursday: Drive to the canyon and get a good night's sleep.
Friday: South Kaibab trail 7.5 miles to the Bright Angel Campground (4,800' down)
Saturday: Hang out at Bright Angel Campground, recover, or likely dayhike around the area.
Sunday: Bright Angel Trail to Indian Gardens Campground - 4.5 miles (1,400' up) - day trip out to Plateau Point for sunset
Monday: Bright Angel Trail to the rim - 4.5 miles (3,400' up)

We will return on Monday afternoon.

Anyone want to come with?

I'm still interested and will talk to you about it during the fall photo workshop event. (If there's still space by then!)

@chumley Cool. I look forward to meeting you. Also - I'm another point and shooter. It'll be good to have some like company at the photo thing.

Soooommmmmeeehooowww methinks anyone calling himself "sebeavs" is probably not too serious about hiking. ;)

On the other hand, I wonder if that msmith is Marsha from SAHC?

Regarding jury duty, it would always be a hardship for me--except maybe this past summer when I wasn't working, (but didn't get called). If you are living well below the poverty level already, then they are just asking you to go deeper into the financial hole. It is ridiculous, because it means it would be hard to get a real peer group for any kind of jury, if the only people who actually show up are retired people and people on welfare. They need to actually pay a decent amount of money to do it. Last I heard it was 12 bucks a day, at least around here. Sure it is all fine and groovy to be a good citizen and do your duty to society and be all-American pie and all that, but if you can't afford to do it, then if you do respond to the letter, it is very time-consuming to get excused. You have to make calls and write a letter to the judge and blah blah blah. So, therefore, the past few years I have been throwing the letters in the trash and not responding. Works every time--I never hear back from them. They cannot prove you received the letter unless they send it via registered mail. So, I would say, "What letter? I didn't get no stinkin' letter!"

Hey, never ran into your group on Humphreys yesterday, I think I was down the summit too early. Maybe I'll see you in the canyon, tho. Doing a Rim-Rim-Rim Nov. 6-10, along with a few other trails. Will be at Bright Angel Campground the afternoon-evening of the 6th (Saturday)

@azdesertfather I wasn't up at the Humphreys summit with the rest of the folks from the ABC group yesterday - I took a shorter version of the hike and was down before the rest of the folks. So it's possible that I saw you and didn't even know it. Now that I know - I'll look for you on Nov. 6th.

Update: Just got a PM from sebeavs - so everyone in that committed column is accounted for.

Yes, Anne - so far we don't have any men signed up in that committed category. Not that I wouldn't be OK with a chick's only trip, but I'd totally be down with a man or two keeping us company, too. chumley? johnr1? IsAli? It's good to have diversity.

Just to throw a quick note in here so that you don't miss an early bus. The Kaibab bus schedule is a bit incorrect, as the first bus leaves the Visitor Center at 5:00 AM instead of the published 5:15 AM that is in the information package. I know this 'cuz I took this early bus yesterday when I hiked down to Cedar Ridge in the dark in order to take some sunrise photos there. They do run at 30 minute intervals until 6:30 though, when the second bus kicks in.

This was the scheduled standard "green route" bus and not the special hiker's shuttle, as I had asked the driver about the difference in the start time from the published schedule. It did go to Yaki point afterwards and stopped at Pipe Creek Vista too.

did this last year, down to Phantom Ranch. On the way up my knee locked up, andthe ice on the bright angel was pretty scary. I had to walk on mule dung for traction the whole way up. That night at the rnch the winds exceeded 50 mph and my tent was laying flat on my body, but I was so tired, I slept right through it. the Trail down from the kaibab was so cool, snow and 17 degrees at the top, but half wy down it was so hot, i had to undress down so I would not burn up. Great trail. I will post pics of it soon. Have fun down there, and dont order the breakfast, though it was good, it was not worth the money at all. Oh you can go to the bathroom and do a quick sponge bath by the sink, and no one will know. pay phone is there if you need to make a call, so bring a phone card.

I'm going down South Kiabab on Saturday with a friend and will be at Bright Angel CG that afternoon and evening. We are then heading up to North Rim for a couple days and back down and up Bright Angel a few days later. We should be able to see each other! I'll either have my orange Savannah cap on or strapped to my pack

Hello - I just taled to Cindy and will be PMing with some additional information. However, to answer you specifically we will settle up on the permit cost at the Canyon. Also, the contact for Phantom Ranch is 888-297-2757 (Xterra)
