$8+ gas by June?
Gas is up to $4.50 in Maranara, and I'm sure well over that in the Valley and Flagstaff. Some places out of state are already well over $6. However, in Arizona we are still not yet seeing $5+ as a common price, if at all.
Should this change, will you be likely to alter or change summer travel plans?
I'm considering dropping a trip to the Cabeza Prieta in the next month due to prices, as I can still go next winter if they drop. However, this was in a framework of prices dropping in a few months and prices being more reasonable come summer. If gas around here is $8 on average by June, $4.50 will seem cheap, and I will wish I at least did my desert trip.
My goal this summer was to go to the White Mountains in California, a region not exactly known for cheap gas, so I probably wouldn't do that if it was at $9 or $10/gallon in western Nevada and far east California. Wouldn't drive to eastern Montana or North Dakota, either. Maybe I would visit Flagstaff, instead? Maybe I would just go to the Angle Orchard and gorge on peaches?

I know I'm dating myself now, but when I first started driving, I vividly remember paying .27 cents a gallon. Is that about a 3 billon% increase?

@cactuscat
Furnace Creek remains the worst place to fill up in Death Valley.
They were charging $6 or $7 back in December.

Re: $8+ gas by June?
I can remember buying gas for a quarter a gallon, although that was an "off-brand".
That is a good illustration of how much the US dollar has depreciated. In 1964 you could have bought a gallon of gas for a quarter. Today, the silver content of a 1964 quarter is worth $4.65, so you could still buy a gallon of a gas for a quarter if you have the right quarter!

Everything else has already gone up. Since last year food is up almost 8% in Phoenix, housing almost 12%, recreation 12%, transportation 20%, clothing 15% ... but but but GAS is $5!!!wrote:everything else will go up, too

Re: $8+ gas by June?
It was related to over supply and a global recession which the US was not affected by, but in 1999 I was briefly paying 75 cents a gallon in NJ. It had been about 1.15 to 1.25 in the year before. Still.
Except wages, which will lag and not increase as rapidly, if they will ever track this current energy price spike. Nor can they as the volatility of gas has increased dramatically over the last 3 years. In fact, the volatility is what makes something like this so dramatic, as our entire society is built around oil. With 64% of Americans living pay check to paycheck, it doesn't matter if those people never hike a minute in their life, a huge spike in something like gas means suffering.
When I posted this thread I thought we might see mid-5s and that would suck, so people would cut back on hiking or alter plans. I didn't think it would come so fast. Now, $8 to $10 is likely.
Also, things like river trips which had an agreed upon contract price are not going to increase in price, and many of those were sold well in advance of this price spike. So, a lot of businesses will have to eat those costs.

If your gonna need gas get it for free! Go siphon it out of somebody's car, preferably a car with a Biden for President sticker (if you can still find one)!

Good time to invest in those locking gas caps. The Jeep has a valve in it to prevent gas from leaking out in case of a rollover so cannot be siphoned; don't know about the Toy. However I read that the thieves like big lifted trucks; they will drill a hole in the tank and let gravity fill their cans. That sucks because at least if they siphon you would have an intact gas tank.
