I just read triplogs for both ways. I vote Romero canyon way, plus there's an awesome lunch spot. But I'm down with either way. Your call Jim. PSST Romero :)

We have the option of cutting Wilderness out when we get to the Lemmon junction if we're running behind or just want to get done quicker...

I would vote for Romero over Sutherland on the initial ascent. Then we'd be on the Mount Lemmon Trail until its junction with the Wilderness of Rocks Trail. From there we can either:
(A) continue on the Mount Lemmon Trail up to the top and the Meadow Trail before heading down to the parking lot (I'm assuming we won't be able to park at the very top)
or
(B) go right at the Wilderness of Rocks and take that to the Lemmon Rock trail which will take us to near the summit

Couple of things:
*Does anyone know where the actual summit is? Do we really care? I'd like to see it because I never have, but it's not that big of a deal.
*I'd prefer to go through the Wilderness of Rocks, but that also isn't that big of a deal. Timing will be critical. Sunset is tentatively scheduled @ 6:32 that day unless we need to bail it out as well. I'm sure that I'll take way too many pictures.

That's basically what I was getting at, before. I agree.

I *do* know where the summit is. It is on an odd-shaped mass sitting in the middle of a field outside of the old radar station fence. It says "Catalina 2 Reset" on the badge. We would need to go down the Meadow trail to get to it...

If we are lucky enough to do the Wilderness of Rocks Trail then up the Lemmon Rock Trail to the upper parking lot/transformers/restroom it would be very easy to backtrack along the Meadow Trail to the actual "summit." I want a picture of John shotgunning a beer at the true summit.

Yea, it's a shame that the actual summit is behind the fence on the Air Force property. They kind of "tossed" the summit marker stone out because they were sick of people sneaking in to be one with the medallion :D

I've walked right through the observatory complex a few times before. Just wear U of A gear and you're good. It's not as if the summit has any prominence

No, the summit is behind a chain-link fence on USAF property.

Bob, I only took 311 pictures on Icehouse/Sixshooter! I managed to take 514 on Mount Ord 2 weeks ago, but that was because I was testing settings. 3 shots of many scenes. I need help...

Alright. Fair Warning: I have a stress fracture that is 95% healed, so I won't be positive that I'll be there probably until this time next week. It was giving me minor grief as late as this last Tues, so it worries me a bit...

Even if I don't make it Nick has been up these trails probably as many times as I so those of you unfamiliar with them will still be in good hands!

Hey Jim

If you can, you should change the event hike to Mount Lemon via Catalina Park. It is in the traildex under m. That is the route I was going to download for this trip. Is this our route?
