C.C. Cragin closed indefinitely

Post by amy1300 »

C.C. Cragin (aka Blue Ridge) Reservoir closed due to low water level creating dangerous conditions.
People may still walk down along the forest road, but no vehicles beyond Rock Crossing Campground.

That's kind of sad. I don't find many good places to paddle when I'm summering up in Flagstaff. I always would go to Blue Ridge at least once or twice.

I'm hoping for an early and wet monsoon -- maybe it'll re-open after some good rains.

If there's a good monsoon, I'm going to the "secret" lower Chevelon reservoir (not the one you're thinking of up by the rim, this one is near Winslow.) Hoping for a good monsoon anyway, except it will make my new job harder.

There's always good flow along the curb on Rt. 66 when it rains.

C.C. Cragin Reservoir opens tomorrow
CLINTS WELL, Ariz., April 13, 2018, For Immediate Release — After further risk assessment and mitigation performed by Forest Service personnel and Arizona Game and Fish Department, Forest Road 751 leading to C.C. Cragin (aka Blue Ridge) Reservoir will open to vehicles Saturday morning beginning at 8 a.m.

Water levels in the reservoir continue to be low, and the public is advised to be aware of underwater hazards.

Due to the low water levels, a section of the boat ramp is closed to vehicles in order to keep vehicles and trailers from backing up to the water’s edge. As such, any kayaks, canoes or small boats will have to be carried to the water’s edge by foot.

For more information about the reservoir status and Mogollon Rim Ranger District, please contact the ranger station at 928-477-2255. Information about C.C. Cragin Reservoir water levels can be found on SRP’s website at www.tinyurl.com/CCCraginRes.

Confusing. Where is that news release posted? I didn't see it in the link at the bottom of your comment, and the FS link in the original post still says its closed(?) :-k

Called the ranger station today. They’re fairly certain the road and lake will both be open April 26th. Was told the lake is 100% full and the water level is over the new gate at the boat launch area currently. Was also told the lake would be stocked with trout very soon, as it hasn’t been in two years. 😀

We met an AZT through-hiker on passage 28 yesterday who said the water at the crossing above the dam was mid-calf deep and very cold.

And here I was wondering how far downstream from the AZT I'd have to walk to get to water for an upcoming 5 day loop involving cabin loop and segment 27. I think I will bring extra socks for this trip now...
