As an Eagle Scout and former Troop Leader I'm very surprised that it was reported that they "ran out of water" half way through the hike. To "be prepared" was always taken to extremes as I recall. Much more than just a motto. So very sad to lose someone so young.

This sort of thing should just never happen. Very sad.

Fixed it.

Yeah, this is just bizarre. I'm completely baffled how everyone in the group ran out of water by the top. Very strange, very sad.

Like most stories in modern media, there's probably a lot more to it than what is being reported (e.g., was there another contributing medical condition involved).

Media always seem to hype the 'water' issue...none of these trails are long or arduous to become 'critically' dehydrated in just an hour or two. My senses If I had any) would point to heat stroke. Regardless of THIS outcome, the media could do the recreational hiker base a service by being educational on the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and their treatment. When seconds count, 'help' is minutes or hours away.
