Coconino Rim - AZT #36, AZ

Post by Jim »

If one was to do a day hike on this solo, and if they were starting from one of the ends heading out for 4 hours or so, and turning back, which is the more scenic end for views and hiking terrain? Thats is which TH is the better to start from ( and end at) as a out and back only going as far as 4 hours of hiking can get you?

@Jim_H
I would start at Grandview lookout, on the north end of AZT 16. The north 9.5 miles is all trail and has some good views over the Coconino rim and occasional views of the Grand Canyon. This would end on the Coconino Rim Road. The southern half is less scenic and at the time I did the hike was about 1/2 two track. The trail head at Grandview lookout is also easier to get to. At your rate of hiking you could probably get 8 to 9 miles in easily in 4 hours. If you look under AZT 16 I have that hike posted. I also have the southern half posted, but I didn't think it was as scenic.

Thanks. I might drive near parts of that, or section 35, since the views are what I am after if I can't hike it. The views off the Coconino Rim look enjoyable, if I can hike it.
