Hollin Basin (Molino Canyon)

Post by andrewp »

Back in the day Hollin Basin, which is the headwaters of the west fork of Molino Canyon was a popular destination for a manageable off-trail excursion to an area that was both remote and reasonably easy to get to. I haven't been there in well over 25 years so I went looking for info and was surprised to find next to nothing.

Save for a route description in Cowgill & Glendening and a couple of old triplogs here there's no mention. Has the area been damaged in some way over the years or have people just moved on to more interesting locations. In looking at fire records it would appear that it hasn't been thoroughly burned in the last 20 years.

Are people still visiting and just not talking about it or is there some unwritten rule that the place should never be mentioned in public? :D

@CannondaleKid

Saw that and a few others like it. The area that I'm interested in is the large basin NNW of Airmen Peak. The route you linked to kisses the SW corner of the basin before it drains into the Molino west fork but I still haven't found much on the basin itself. The easier routes to the basin jump off the upper Bug Spring trail either just before or toward the end of its descent into the creekbed. Over a saddle and into the basin...

@andrewp
That's how we used to get to it back in the day with SAHC.

There's two existing triplogs to that area (Pivo and Grottogirl) that I found, but nobody has written a description for it. If you want to share information about a hike you think others will love, I encourage you to write up a new guide for HAZ.

On occasion I join up for a social hike with some of the guys from SARA and they pick a place to go bushwhacking. I was out in that general area with them over the summer and I think some of they were back there a week or two ago. Still a place that people visit, just not the AllTrails crowd or the very few of us folks from HAZ that live in Tucson.

Lots of hikes in the Tucson area that we either haven't hiked yet or gotten around to writing up. Love to see you post something up.

Thanks for your replies everyone! Looks like I know where I'm going on my Friday excursion :)

Assuming I don't get horribly lost I'll do my best at writing something up. Likely won't be up to the same standards of quality or usefulness as other guides, but I'll do my best...

@andrewp
I remember going there on a SAHC hike, probably 23 years ago or so. What I remember is that I thought it would be a nice place for a quick backpacking trip. I seem to recall getting there from near the Bear Canyon picnic area, the same as the GPS route you linked.

I was close to Hollin basin a couple weeks back on the may to Airmen via the West Fork of Molino. From what I saw from up top it didn't look burned.

I ignored a foot injury that was acting up yesterday and made the trek. I may not be able to walk now, but it was totally worth it :)

Really is a beautiful area and as far as I can tell it's been generally untouched by fire. I believe part of the basin was inside the burn area for Aspen, but there's little actual evidence of burn. Definitely nothing recent. Sadly, it's likely just a matter of time as the forest is very thick and overgrown. It's easy to imagine this as a real tinderbox come June / July.

While this area obviously sees very little traffic it was really depressing to see the amount of garbage left behind (recently). One of the campsites was littered with wet wipes and the previous users also forgot to take their fiberglass axe handle and Frisbee. At another one the previous users took the plastic sheets that they were using as ground cloths and stuffed them into the fire ring, then piled wood on top to weigh them down. I picked up a some of the detritus, but wasn't prepared for that and had limited room to pack any crap out. Next time I'll bring a bigger pack!

Speaking of campsites, I found a few sites in the ponderosa stands near the main creekbed, but didn't see any optimal camping areas farther down near the falls. For those who have been there before do you have any tips on good places to look farther downstream?

Followed the ridge walk route posted by @GrottoGirl on the way out and the one posted by @RedwallNHops back to the trailhead. Next time I'll likely stick to the ridge walk in both directions as it's arguably an easier hike and the view is much better.
