CDT - Crazy Cook Monument access

Post by garyc57 »

With the CDT shuttle companies shut down because of COVID, a couple of friends reached out to me, asking me to drive them to the Crazy Cook Monument - the "official" southern terminus of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT).

Are there any GPS tracks or driving directions on which dirt roads to take to get there?

Google Maps provides "a route", but looking at it in detail... I don't think I want to take that route.  It looks very dicy. :scared:

I see a "Commodore Road" that leaves the monument, and gets very near Hwy 81, but suddenly veers away "at the last minute".  As close as it gets, is this Commodore Road a good one to drive in on?

Any information and help you can provide would be appreciated.

C-11 to Commodore Road all the way there. According to BLM.

Companies? I thought it was just the CDT Coalition that provided the shuttles. Are you planning on caching water for them too as they are not stocking that either?

A bigger issue might be New Mexico's 10 day quarantine on entry.

@rcorfman
The guys I'm shuttling are bringing their own water to cache. I'll probably buy several gallons and mark those public to help other hikers.

Quarantine? That's the first I've heard of a New Mexico quarantine. The shuttle isn't until April, so I have some time to check up on that and see what's going on. Thanks for the heads-up!
