Patagonias or Huachucas Car Camp/Hike

Post by SJFL »

Hi All-

It's been a minute since I've been on here--a bad foot injury (plantar plate tear) had me on ice for almost eight months. Still not 100%.

I'm looking to do a night of car camping and hiking in the Patagonias or on the west side of the Huachucas. Wondering if anyone was willing to share some thoughts. I love working (photographing) in canyons and washes, so bonus for that. But I can't do too much scrambling or significant elevation change on account of the foot. I have a Forester... so, that limits any nutty off-roading.

So, if you know of a good car camping spot that's a reasonable drive away from some good hiking, I would love to know. Sorry for the broad parameters.

Thank you in advance.

I'd recommend the Sunnyside Canyon area, some decent camp sites near the AZT TH, there's a cool ghost town to explore, and a few trails. Could walk the road up to Peterson Ponds which is also a nice spot.

I'd avoid the Patagonias for day hiking unless you have a good vehicle and like walking on jeep roads, or really like abandoned mines. I've explored the area quite a bit, it's pretty, but there are no official trails. Some great camping along Harshaw road, though. I could recommend some hikes if you insist on that area.

@ShatteredArm
Thank you for this. I don't know this area at all well. Really appreciate the tip.

Best wishes.
