$10 per tag seems like it'd add up to the point where I'd just DIY contact info on something.

I tend to occasionally lose small pieces of gear in really out of the way places vs large ones where people would often frequent. :/

Call me a cynic, but that's a scam if I ever saw one.

What's wrong with buying a label maker for small items, or writing your phone/email in permanent marker on larger items, or even carving/scratching it in?

Pretty sure I left a trekking pole leaning against my car in the Estrellas before driving off...

I was pitched something similar by an entrepreneur a while ago and asked the same question. Their response was something along the lines of, "That's exactly why this is needed! You can keep your personal info [phone, email, addy, whatever] out of the hands of potential strangers!"
So, their answer was security, for whatever that's worth.

Probably not worth a lot. For those that would use the label to return the item, it worked fine. For those that keep the item, then they're ignoring the label.

My Mom had a roll of cloth with my last name printed on it. She sewed the labels on all our clothes. I'm not sure why, but I think so we'd know what pair of underwear was ours at summer camp.

You can put an email or phone number without affecting your security at all. Does this company advertise their secure products on google and facebook? :lol:

As I mentioned in the original post I have a similar tag on my dog's collar. When scanned I get a notification on my phone showing the location of the phone that scanned the tag.
That's helpful if the finder/ scanner isn't inclined to return the dog or item.

@Pivo
Why on earth would someone scan the thing with no intention of returning it? Also, for your dog's tag, it would need to be scanned by a specific app on the phone, correct? So I imagine the tag has directions that indicate the name of the app and what to do with it?

They did not, perhaps unsurprisingly, receive funding (although I could see why maybe some people wouldn't want to even have those out there I suppose but you could always use forwarding if you're THAT concerned)

@rcorfman
No specific app is needed on iPhone/Android for a while now; you just fire up your camera and point it to the QR code and it will give you the option to go to the web page that leads to

Sure, but then the web page needs to get the visitor's location and send it off. I for one, don't allow that and hope most people wouldn't, though that's probably wishful thinking.
