Rabid fox in the News
While searching online for more info about the dead backpacker that @BiFrost found, I tripped across this recent story about a rabid fox attacking hikers on the Hugh Norris Trail in Saguaro National Park West. (Near Tucson.)
Be careful. It really is "a jungle out there."

Kelly and I had to reroute our hike around the closure area last week. We were not concerned. There actually was a game warden out looking for the fox. It’s been about 8-10 days since it was attacking people, so whether the warden got it, or it succumbed to the rabies, it’s dead by now.
There was a rabid coyote in someone’s backyard not far from there a few weeks prior, so there might be an ongoing outbreak.

Stop crying and just go do the hike.

@LindaAnn
The story says that the rabid fox has been killed.

That’s good. I don’t open links, so didn’t read the article. Hopefully it didn’t infect too many other animals before they killed it.

Re: Rabid fox in the News
A popular Influencer (who is trying to Thru-Hike the AZT late, and trying to take care of her 6 mo old baby along the way via zeros) posted a video the other day about her encounter with a rabid skunk and a rabid fox at the 150-ish mile mark.
Here's Game & Fish about it.
Two other recent hits about rabies on the AZT from a quick search.

What's her name? I follow one of the AZT pages, haven't seen much lately about rabid animals. Heard about it earlier this spring/late winter, mostly to the south end of the trail. So many people seem to have started late this year. Sounds miserable.
