Just for everyone's information. This week-end spent an awesome week-end with my two young uns at the Ten-X campground, just 4.3 miles from the entrance of the Grand Canyon National Park. I love this campground! 70 sites to pick from and mostly empty. The park ranger I talked to said it is pretty much like this all the time, except around Memorial Day week-end. Vaulted heads, water at certain points, handicap sights, it is a great campground to take the kids for a week-end, or visitors who like to camp and see the Grand Canyon.
We had a great time. Arrived around 11:00 AM, set up camp, and had lunch at McDonalds in Tusayan. Afterwards, launched to the south rim, where we seen a bull elk chowing down just off the road, massive traffic and car parking around Mather Point, and finally arrived in the parking area, "D" to be exact. A short walk and boom! The Grand Canyon. My kids loved it and of course I am envious of those backpackers I see, dirty, sweaty, grubby, resting and cooling off in the shade of the plaza around Bright Angel Lodge. Dori wanted to hike Bright Angel and so I took her and Chris to what I call the hole in the rock, just below the rim so they could get a taste of what it would be like. Dori says she wants to do it and I said you have to wait until you are a little older. I hope I can do it then!
Back at camp and during the evening we went down to the amphitheater for a ranger talk. I really like 'em and the kids seem to enjoy them. He talked about the benifits of fire in the forests.
We closed our evening with a small campfire, hot chocolate for the kids, coffee for me, and marshmellows all around!
Today, before leaving we ended our stay with a short hike on the Ten-X Nature Trail, with Dori leading the way.
In closing, I plan to bring my kids here again, hopefully a little longer because it is really a nice, I think forgotten campground, near the south rim of the Grand Canyon.
Pictures will follow in a couple of days.
