January overnight

Post by onetrooper »

I'm looking for a hike about 4-6 miles one way, with water available, for an overnight in January. We're coming from Phoenix, and would like to leave on Saturday morning, and be back Sunday evening. Suggestions?

The superstitions are only a half an hour from phoenix and there are tons of 4-6 mile round trip hikes. It can be difficult to find water that close but if you stick to the areas around second or first water springs it shouldn't be a problem. If your willing to go 4-6 miles each way then there are even more options. The hike into rogers trough is really nice and there should be water there that time of year. Theres also haunted canyon towards globe, I've never been but I hear its a great hike.

Cave Creek trail #4 would be a decent choice. It won't be too cold, has water, and offers several possible campsite areas. You can even set up a car shuttle if you like, or turn it into a loop.

Onetrooper, I was curious to see if your destination might include snow camping. In January you might come across some of the stuff, right? here are my warmer (up to 5000ft.) suggestions reasonably close to the Valley:

LaBarge Canyon, Lower 4+ miles

Sycamore Creek to Parsons spr. 4+ miles

Hells Hole at Reynolds Creek 6 miles
or..
Deer Creek is a nice intro to Mazatzals <10 miles

If you like creekbed walking, Aravaipa, although a bit cool, is a wonderful area. Plenty of water, of course, and about 45-50 minutes to the T/H from Phoenix.
Other streambed hikes would include the West Fork of Oak Creek (sometimes crowded), and West Clear Creek.
I'd second Cave Creek, as well - but watch those fronts, Carefree picks up some weather sometimes.
I've been to Haunted Canyon 2X... it's beautiful, but it might be cool.
If you are not adverse to some boulder clamoring, you might try Agua Fria down from Badger Springs; there is plenty of water, and it is really beautiful, as well.
