Post by xrock »

I know it's not in Az, but the people going are~
Anyone done the Grand Gulch? We're planning a late May- 3 day trek to see the Aasazi ruins and petroglyphs that are plentiful there.

I'll be ordering the permits soon and a couple people from the Arizona Xterra Club will be going.

Anyone's free to join as long as you're fun lovin!

I've done the Kane-Bullet loop, as well as the Owl-Fish Creek loop.
Outstanding country!

I'd recommend Kane/ Bullet for quantity of ruins... don't miss "Perfect Kiva"

Watch for biting flies in May..... I might take a headnet.

Have fun, it's a GREAT area.

Kane/Bullet is probably best for quantity and quality. I was in off the government trailhead for four days this last october- BigMan Panel is great along with Bannister ruin, and several unnamed ruins along the way. Todie is a real grunt with any kind of pack. Green Mask Spring is very good.
Neighboring Slickhorn Canyon offers more solitude- in a very short distance in Slickhorn 1 is a Kiva with the original roof, BLM has a reproduction ladder and you can go inside. Road Canyon is good to the Seven Kivas and is a pretty canyon with lots of solitude. Most of the ruins in Fish and Owl are up pretty high except for the one right off the rim in Owl.
Of course the most awesome is the "moonhouse" whose location I will never reveal but unfortunately more people are discovering.
You should be ok for water in May but do watch those bugs. It was pretty dry in October- the rangers should be able to give you the heads up.

Thanks for the info.
Hopefully, we'll be able to find the moonhouse. I'm a big Anasazi fan and just finished a couple books about Grand Gultch. I'm pretty stoked about going. Bought the maps today.

Anyone want to go? It would probably be a leave Thursday after work and return Monday afternoon thing.

Just out of curiousity and a little confused, where exactly is this hike? (ie. what state/region?) Also when are you planning on going?

We're planning on going the last weekend in May. The first weekend in May we're doing the Havasu falls hike.

It's west of Blanding, Utah. If you know where Valley of the Gods is- it's just west of that.

I'll be in southern utah 1 week in May and two in October. Can't nail down my boss yet re dates or I'd be interested. May- I intend to either backpack S Fork of Ticaboo at Lake Powell (unfinished business there) then swing around to Cedar Mesa and hit a few canyons there, or drag a friend of mine thru Buckskin (he's been wanting to go forever) ; and/or the loop off Cottonwood Canyon , over Yellow Rock and down by the arch into Hackberry. Too much to see and do and not enough time off!!!!

I'm thinking Moonhouse Ruin is not in Grand Gulch. If I have the name right, Moonhouse is east of the highway, quite a ways down a dirt road, then across some state land. Suggest you ask at Kane Gulch.

Moonhouse is the one with sort of a double wall, that is a walled up front with rooms off an open area behind the first wall???

The Moonhouse is not in Grand Gulch, but in the Cedar Mesa Vicinity. It has been photographed by the great David Muench and it in some of his coffee table photo books. I have a pic of it at http://community.webshots.com/user/redroxx44

FYI- Valley of the Gods is great car camping. Also take the little road to the overlook to the Goosenecks of the San Juan just out of Mexican Hat. Its incredible- take a wide angle lens if you are into photography.
In the Hat there's a spot across from the gas station that cooks steaks outside. On a nice day not better place to sit out and enjoy a cold one!!

Marlee- those dates will work. 5/20 - 5/24. Let me know if you want to go and we can schedule a meet - since you don't know the people going. It's a good group and we'll have a good guide with us.

Thanks for the info HAZ- One question though, that's been bothering me.

Why is it, when you do hiking trail work they want you to pay to do it.

We do alot of volunteer work in the Arizona Xterra CLub for offroading and socializing. Stuff like Support vehicles for bike runs and twice a year we clean up FR532 (Indian Springs Wash by Bartlett)

We go and volunteer our time and do some good work. I don't understand where the paying comes into play.

Very simple, there is no money, and these things take money so it's gotta come from somewhere.

Ok, thanks Xrock. Yes, I'd love to go. I guess if you insist, we can meet first - though I usually like to just spring myself onto people I don't know and spend 24-3 with them - you know, after they're stuck with me  But we'll do it your congeneal way! Set something up and I'll be there - after 5:00 on weekdays will work best for me.

Cool- hehe The we usually do the planning meet's so we can have a decent dinner, a few drinks, get to know each other and plan out who brings what since there are so many communal items needed on an outing this long with no stores :D

Bailey is welcome to attend the hike as well (as long as he's nice :) )
My yellow lab will be going. We just have to keep them out of the water sources and ruins.
