Superstition Ridgeline

Post by Vaporman »

Looking for a partner or group to do this hike with. I could probably do this hike alone with all the research and mental planning I've done, but I probably shouldn't considering how remote it is up there. Feb 11th or the 25th would be good days for me. Into March would be a little too late and Spring Training is going on then also. I also noticed that I just missed a group that went up there. :( . I've hiked that area a bit and I think I'm going to hit the Superstition Peak this weekend to get more acquainted with the Carney springs side. I might even finish it up with a Dacite Super Loop. Hope to hear from someone. :D

SUPERSTITION RIDGELINE DAY HIKE(S) & CAMP OUT - Lost Dutchmen State Park

Sat - Sun, Mar 4 – 5

Leader: Steve Desrochers luv2hikeinaz@cox.net
Length: +/- 11 miles

Phone: 480-926-7939

Rating: Strenuous A+ or

Contact leader by Feb 28th to participate, meeting time & location TBD

Easy option - see below

This is our 5th annual trek across the rooftop of the Superstition Mountains, aka “the Ridgeline”. Starting from the Carney Spring trailhead, the climb up to the ridgeline gains approx 3000'. The ridgeline trail then passes the Superstition Mountain Summit and proceeds across numerous ups and downs with beautiful views of the Superstitions and surrounding area. The descent will be another 2,900 feet down Siphon Draw trail ending at the Lost Dutchman State Park (LDSP) camping area. For those inclined, we will return the opposite way on Sunday. Bring plenty of water (at least 4 liters), lunch, and salty snacks. Be sure to bring a headlamp, appropriate clothing, and don’t forget the camera! Because of the Sunday return option, there will be a BBQ and car camping at LDSP on Saturday night. Those that wish to partake on just Saturday’s hike or Sunday’s are welcome (of course, I don’t see why you would not do both). Folks that do not want to do the hike are, of course, invited to come and camp and/or come and hike on Sunday up Siphon Draw or other easy/moderate trails within LDSP.

I can't make either of those dates you suggested, but I have done the ridgeline 3 times.

I really think the hike can be broken up into 3 pretty equal sections.

Cairney to Superstition Peak
Superstition Peak to Flat Iron pretty straight forward most of the time but this is also the only section that I have lost the trail in as well.
Flat Iron to LDSP.

If you can do Superstiton Peak and Flat Iron, you shouldn't have a problem with the middle section.

Thats just my opinion though.

Actually there is someone from the Take A Hike club doing it the 12th, maybe that can work for you.
