Trout fishing around phoenix

Post by JoelHazelton »

I was just wondering if anybody knew of any places close to Phoenix that they stock trout. We usually go to oak creek, but that's kinda far...

They stocked the Salt River, but that was a couple months ago. On the plus side, there are some bass in there, that have hopefully been eating trout fry! If you are fly-fishing, toss out a wooly worm, or some kind of representative streamer. If you are fishing with bait, you can't go wrong with minnows.

not really in PhX but West clear creek isn't too far away, and the Verde river also had decent trout. I had really good luck this year on a stretch by dead horse state park

In response to azpride's reply:

beleive it or not they stock Rainbow Trout in the Tempe Town Lakes right down near Mill and the 202. Fishing is probably best in the Spring, right after they stock it. Although, if you want some real Trout fishing you have to head up to the Rim.

not entirely true. There is an area off Crackerjack rd. in East Verde that has both Native rainbow and Brown trouts.
There are 2 types of trout in Apache lake, some more in Tonto creek near Gisela, and some really good catches are available at
squirrel!

In response to arnold21's reply: They stock the Green Valley Park lakes in Payson too with trout. Someone has also caught a large bass there and they don't stock bass there. Someone said it was tackle box stocked. (but it is reclaimed water in the lakes not sure if you want to eat them)

Salt River trout

Post by fishbike »

The Salt River is your best bet to get local. I usually use a kayak to get to the choice spots, but the eddys below a good riffle are your best bet.
I usually try to get to the water around 4pm on the weekends, to give the tubers time to clear out. Nice fish too, usually in the 8" to 14" range.
Calmer than you are.

Lower Salt just beneath Stuart Mountain Dam (Saguaro Lake).

Let's go to the source, the folks that run the hatcheries at AZ Game & Fish
http://www.gf.state.az.us/h_f/where_fish.shtml
http://www.gf.state.az.us/h_f/where_fish_central.shtml

And looking at the records, this one surprised me.
Trout, Rainbow 12 lb. 5.76 oz. 32.25 in., Tempe Town Lake
Brandon Childs, Gilbert 12/28/02
http://www.gf.state.az.us/h_f/state_records.shtml

And for the AZ G&F weekly fishing report
http://www.gf.state.az.us/artman/publis ... x_28.shtml
It looks like the Lower Salt is the place because of the forest closures
Believe it or not, this isn’t a bad time to fish the Lower Salt River. This may be the last week we can stock it, maybe not. Regardless, it is getting an extra dose of trout this week that are being diverted from the fisheries that are closed due to fire restrictions. It’s a little trout bonus close to home, which isn’t a bad deal considering gas prices. First light is best.
