Late Plans

Post by kylemorgan »

Alright folks, I need a hike. I'm planning on leaving Sunday afternoon, coming back Tuesday, would like cool to cold and possibly water/fishing. Preferably something empty or at least not crowded. Any suggestions?

check into the trails (3) that access the upper West Clear Creek. We did the Maxwell, and I caught one trout, but I wasnt really trying for fish. Its a real steep and short (.7mi) hike but the fishing up and downstream is good. The other two are the Calloway and Tramway trails. Beautiful area even if you get skunked.

Gotta tube? Camp up top of Chevelon Canyon (end of FS480 - you'll need a 4X4 or at least good clearance) and fish in the south end of the lake or hike down Telephone Ridge and hit the pools in the creek. There is good trout taken up there occassionally. You can hike as much as you want on the fisherman made trails up and down the canyon.

Keep in mind fire restrictions are in place- the camp sites on top at the south end of the lake may be considered "dispersed"- might want to check Apache Sitgreaves NF for that- but the sites along the creek definately are not.

Good luck!

Well I made the hike down Maxwell. Had a bear about 10-15 yards from my tent and sprained my ankle while hiking around. Climbing back up that trail w/ my pack and a sprained ankle: priceless. It's a good thing the views were, too.

when did you go? Ryan and I were there Sun, Mon and also had a bear encounter. The older guy with the son said someone had told him about a bear that night. Ryan had the bear right outside his tent for about 10 minutes. I slept through the whole thing, tentless to boot! Saw many many trout in the creek.

Got there late Sunday and was going to stay until Tuesday, but left early Monday after I sprained my ankle.
