Elevation Change: 1375’
A popular loop hike in the Prescott area; with a trailhead elevation of 6346’ this is a great way to escape the summer heat. It is a steady climb up Spruce Mountain and back down. Great views along the way and from the top where we will eat lunch/snack before heading back down. There is also a fire lookout tower on top which will likely be open to visitors.
The hike follows forest trail 307 up and over Spruce Mountain, going through large stands of Ponderosa, Spruce and Oak trees, as well as providing some spectacular views of the surrounding countryside (including the Granite Dells, Granite Mountain, The San Francisco Peaks, and three area lakes). If you are extra attentive, you might find: an old, abandoned miner's cabin, a deserted crab-apple orchard, a year-round spring, white-tail deer, black bear, mountain lion, bald eagles, javelina, scorpions, rattlers, tarantulas and cone nosed kissing bugs.
There are no reliable water sources along the trail, so bring your own.
