Re: flagstaff
At the top of the main page, below the HikeArizona banner and the Alphabet, you will see several boxes.mcopela wrote:Anyone know a good backpak spot in Flag??????
Find the Hike Indexes box and click on the down arrow to the right of it. Look below Locations and find the Perks section. Scroll down to the Backpacking link and click. This will open up a page with all backpacking hikes in AZ.
Since you only want backpacking in Flagstaff, look at the right side of the Backpacking banner where it says Regions. Click on the down arrow at the right of the box and choose Flagstaff. This will list all backpacking hikes in Flag.
You can peruse this list and choose. Good luck and have fun
Alternatively:
From the Main Page or the Hike Indexes page, you will see several rows below the Banner, the Alphabet and the Boxes. One row is titled Perks. On this row you can click the Backpacking Link which will open up the page with all of the backpacking hikes in AZ.
Since you only want backpacking in Flagstaff, look at the right side of the Backpacking banner where it says Regions. Click on the down arrow at the right of the box and choose Flagstaff. This will list all backpacking hikes in Flag.

Re: flagstaff
So the question still stands. I've never been on an overnight in or around Flag because nothing sounds appealing. Can someone prove me wrong?mcopela wrote:Anyone know a good backpak spot in Flag??????

A short but 2000'+ hike up to the old tiny cabin at the saddle below the Kendrick Peak fire lookout tower. For those looking for a more challenging trip I would have to recommend coming up either of the trails on the north side. You'll have to carry all your water and have to see burned forest, especially on the north side. It's the best of the very few backpacks I would do around there.

Up to Humphrey's from Shultz Tank via the Weatherford; sunset @ the summit, camping @ the saddle (this has the added benefit of an awesome sunrise, as well). Or if the weather is iffy on the saddle, a half-mile or so down the Humphrey's Trail toward the ski lodge there are a few decent camping spots.
Next day....continue down Humphrey's to the lodge, water up, & pick up the Kachina Trail & then the Weatherford again back to your starting spot @ Schultz Tank.... 'bout 21 mi. loop.
For a shorter trip, you might consider Sandy's Canyon east into Walnut Canyon.

I would make sure that the monsoon was over before I would want to be on any of the San Francisco Peak ridges. Too much lightning during monsoon season for me. Mornings are fine, it's the afternoons when the monsoons fire up. A half-mile down might be ok as long as you weren't under the tallest tree. Otherwise I agree with you that this is an awesome hike & backpack.hikeaz wrote:Up to Humphrey's from Shultz Tank via the Weatherford; sunset @ the summit, camping @ the saddle (this has the added benefit of an awesome sunrise, as well). not in any particular order...
Little Bear
Kendrick Peak
Aubineau/Bear Jaw
Kachina
watch out for lightning, double check for overnight camping, never backpacked these, but these were a few of my favorite trails back in the day- and when all is said and done, and you're on your way home, stop in town and grab some 'za at NiMarcos

i found the Sycamore rim loop to be ok, great area at Sycamore Falls and also popular with the rock jocks.
Upper Pumphouse wash is a short backpack but has some neat stuff to check out.
Kelsey trail to Little LO canyon has a few interesting narrows and reliable springs.
Lew tank meadow is on the north side of Humphreys with alternate views of said mountain and Kendrick as well.
