Grand Canyon, Ariz. August 15, 2006 – A 64 year-old Florida man
collapsed yesterday on the Bright Angel Trail within Grand Canyon
National Park and was pronounced dead after unsuccessful CPR efforts
were conducted.
The man, who had been hiking alone, collapsed approximately 1 mile
below the rim of the canyon in an area known as the Coconino
Switchbacks. Mule wranglers with Xanterra South Rim, LLC, a park
concessioner, reported the incident at approximately 11:45 a.m.
The man's body was flown out of the canyon by a National Park Service
helicopter and transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's
Officer in Flagstaff, Arizona.
The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner.
Release of the man's name is pending notification of next-of-kin.
