Snow in the Canyon Country

Post by PaleoRob »

Its snowing in Page. Supposed to get up to 5 inches by the end of tomorrow! Wow! Be aware, if you're coming up this way, that the roads'll be icy and muddy. And now, for your viewing pleasure:

And now tomorrow I'm off to the Paria Plateau for two days. Cold, here I come...

We have about 2 inches in my yard here! Send more down this way, Rob! I plan on going to Pole Knoll again, or over by the base of Baldy or to Green's Pk. area, wherever I can find the most snow, later on this afternoon or tomorrow when I feel comfortable about driving up there. They have recently started putting a chemical on Hwy. 260 instead of cinders. It is a lot safer to drive now. They say it won't hurt your car or the environment. Who knows? Anyway, it's safer to drive on it.

In response to azbackpackr's reply: They have been using it along I40 and on some of the other highways and it has been killing the trees next to the road. Not like the bark beetle trees but you can see where the spray from the snow plows have sprayed on the trees and all those branches are dead. I think that cinders are alot better at least all you will get once in awhile is a windshield star but at least that is replacable.

Not sure if they are using same chemical on I-40 as on 260, but sure hope it doesn't hurt our beautiful trees! I do believe the decision was made to use it after a good number of fatal accidents on 260 which occurred when only cinders were in use. I assume that the powers that be weighed the pros and cons, decided on the chemical. Not sure what it's called. They have recently built a new building, near the sledding hill between Sunrise turnoff and Greer turnoff, on FR 117G, hidden back in the woods, to store the chemical. The FS took a lot of flak for allowing the building to be built, as it had to be pretty substantial to disallow leakage of the chemical into the soil from the building.

Although it rained in Phx. yesterday and was supposed to snow overnight here, it hasn't as yet, although the atmosphere is pretty thick and damp right now at 5:30 a.m.
