Timing
My wife and I and a couple friends are looking at doing the Escalante Route. My wife seems to think its a pretty quick trail. I got the impression that its not exactly the easiest trail, and it takes more than a couple days to finish. No hike description, so I'm hoping someone out there with some experience can enlighten us.

Re: Timing
Rob, check with IGO--you know how to find him. He's done it before and is doing it again in Oct. He is a slow hiker, too, from what he says.

Re: Timing
I did that hike 2 years ago.
Day 1: Hiked down New Hance and camped at the rapids
Day 2: Across the Escalante to Cardenes Creek (it's a few more miles to go all the way to tanner) we did this in Decemeber or January so there wasn't that many hours of light in the day, plus we got a late start that day since I slept in.
Day 3: Over to tanner and then we were going to hike out, but decided to Explore up the tanner drainage
Day 4: Hiked out
I think for most people I would recommend the 4 days. Day 3 I would hike 1/2 way out tanner though. The trail is easy to follow now, I guess it used to be a lot more remote. There are a few walls with some light climbing, some people have a bigger problem with it and raise/lower there packs with rope. I never found a spot were that was needed for us.
It's my favorite trail in the canyon, hands down, I hope to do it again next year. AZHeat did it as a dayhike last year, but I wouldn't recommend that for 99% of people.
This site has some good info on it, as well as some pictures of the climbs:

Here is my trip report, it may answer a question or two:

Re: Timing
Rob, I did this hike almost 2 years ago.
I have trip reports New Hance Trail, Escalante Route and Tanner Trail.
I took 3 days, but could probably do it in 2. I wouldn't want to though; why rush through the canyon?

Re: Timing
yes, i agree w/davis. it is my favorite too. done it twice, once solo and once w/hoffmaster. 3 days is minimum, but to explore , 4 would be better. I plan on doing it again this year, probably solo. Have a really great time!
