Southern Arizona Wineries

Post by JoelHazelton »

This weekend, after a wonderful trip to many different areas of Southern Arizona, we stopped by the Sonoita winery to buy my dad a bottle of locally produced wine as a Christmas gift, and ended up spending an hour or so tasting wine. Typically, this is not something I would want to do (definitely out of my comfort zone), but it was fun! Granted, I was with some wonderful company (sister and brother-in-law) who undoubtedly made the experience much better, but the people there were awesome and the wine was tasty. The atmosphere was very relaxed, and best of all, I left with a good buzz!

Anyway, my point is, next time you visit southern Arizona, I would recommend a trip to one of the wineries. The turnoff is on I-90 on the south side, shortly after you pass through the Whetstone mountains, traveling west. At the Sonoita Winery (I believe there are two others you can visit from the same turnoff) it was 4 dollars to sample 8 wines and leave with a Sonoita Winery souvenir glass.

Sometimes venturing away from your comfort zone can pay off.

Kokopelli wineries offered some very good varieties last year, they were actually the "house wine" for several valley restaurants. Thats very reassuring.
