Looking for a great place to go!!!!

Post by mistipowell1001 »

Hi everyone!! I am new to Arizona! Just moved here from Portland Oregon and I am looking to get out and explore. I was thinking of doing a 1 night backpacking trip with my daughter. She is almost 6 and has gone on many hikes with me, but never backpacked. Does anyone know of a good place to go? I live in Lake Havasu, but am willing to travel a little...

Thank you,
Misti :)

yessir! that is the quickest way to find a hike in the area. then you can sort out the details on the navigation page by searching "creeks perennial", "skill levels", "in season" etc... its under the Navigation button, that will open some page to see "perks" and "flash maps" for instance.
its awesome when you want to find a great waterfall, and you have no idea (like me) where such a thing exists in the desert.
so Misti, happy searching. :D

in the top right click navigation. From that page, click on the "AZ regions" flash map link.

The Hualapai Mtns. over by Kingman would be nice this time of year. (It has a funny spelling but is pronounced WALLA pie.) They have pine trees on top, and will be a lot cooler than Lake Havasu! (They get snow on them in winter!) They have a few short trails, and I do believe backpacking is allowed. Would be easy for you to find out, anyway.

By the way, welcome to this website. I absolutely love LHC, have thought of moving there, in fact. There used to be a hiking club there a long time ago. I found this out because I came across a hiking map of the area--can't recall where I picked that up, but it was somewhere in LHC. I know they at least have a road bike club, and usually there are a few cyclists in a club who also enjoy hiking.

LHC parks and rec is awesome--they have kayaking classes, and other fun outdoor classes, and the most beautiful public swimming pool I've ever seen. The city keeps expanding the paved bike paths, which is very nice, also.

If you just moved there you may not know this: a fun thing to do with your kid is to take her on the ferry ride across the lake that goes to the Indian casino on the California side of the lake. It is very cheap, like 3 bucks or something. When you get to the other side, if you just want to ride on the boat, you just stand on the wharf and wait for the captain (who is a very nice person) to take you back again. The return trip is free. We did this very early in the a.m. and it was so beautiful with the sun coming up, I just can't tell you how gorgeous it was.

Don't be a stranger--as far as I know you're the only person I've ever seen posting from that area! Keep us posted on non-motorized outdoors stuff in that area--there are some of us here who would be very interested in your comments. Other non-motorized sports would include kayaking or canoeing the Topock Gorge, mountain or road biking, sailing or sea kayaking on the lake, scuba diving, rock climbing, etc.

Thanks very much,

Elizabeth
