So I just got this email from my boss. You think he'd trade with me?
I’ll be out of the office next week from Monday through Thursday, on furlough Monday and on vacation the rest of the days.
I have to go on some stupid hikes in Sedona and Payson with some out-of-town friends. If only I were being ironic. Not much of a hiker although the scenery is nice.

You don't get paid for furlough, generally. It's a way employers are saving money without layoffs - forcing people to take unpaid time off for a certain number of days each year. It think it's 10 at the UofA this year. I'm hoping it will translate into my husband actually taking some time off this year (he's lost vacation 3 years in a row)... Can you tell he's not addicted to hiking like me?
My company is considering furloughs as well as the market continues to shrivel and die like the wicked witch in a monsoon storm. I'm not opposed. If you're gonna cut my salary, you can bet I'm gonna be out in the hills more...

Yeah. I'm planning on doing some really stupid hikes this weekend.
As writelots explained, furlough is forced, unpaid time off. For us, it's a 10% pay cut, and comes with one day off every two weeks. Much better than the alternative, though there are people for whom a 10% cut in pay hurts quite a bit.
You think I should ask him which "stupid" hikes he's going on? West Fork? Fossil Springs? Horton Creek? ;)

Yeah, do ask him. That way, if we run into him, we can make sure that he hates the wilderness enough to never return
Not that I have anything against your boss in particular, I just like to try to keep the wilds for those who's hearts are in it...
