Windows question

Post by desert spirit »

I think I have a problem with Internet Explorer. Or maybe a virus or trojan horse, whatever. Maybe someone here can help me ...

I upgraded to Internet Explorer 8 the other day, cause Windows was yelling at me to do it. But now everytime I start up IE, the Norton Anti-Phishing gets turned off and I have to manually turn it back on. Also, over time the computer runs slower and slower, and at first IE tends to lock up, but if I let it go eventually the whole computer locks up.

If I look at the Windows Task Manager, there are TWO copies of "iexplore.exe", and one of them consumes a huge amount of memory ... it starts out around 250 MB and gradually increases to over 1 GB. I don't know what the second copy of iexplore is doing, but if I force it closed with the Task Manager, it starts right back up again by itself.

This sure doesn't sound right to me. Does anyone know what's going on? Thanks :)

I have found that IE8 creates a huge mess and just isn't ready for use at this time. If you uninstall IE8 and stick with IE7, you will be better off. I have had to do this on most of my clients/customers machines because of the same exact issue you are describing, slow computer, even slower internet. Takes for ever for the homepage to load up and most of the time it will just lock up and slow the rest of the machine down, asks if you want to restore the previous session after it failed to properly close down the previous time, etc. With IE8, you will have iexplorer.exe running at all times, and additional ones will open when you actually launch the program. In my experienceYou are more than welcome to PM me for any more information.

Get A Mac!
Believe me, I am a recent convert and I have never been sorry that I made the switch.

You will be free from the Trojan/Virus Hassles. You can run Windows in a virtual machine if you have software you need to run that has no equivalent on the Mac.

In response to TwoWeims:
While I work in *nix daily, and I'm indeed a mac user.. it's an expensive fix for an IE8 problem.. Firefox would resolve it too :D

Definitely follow the advice given here...DUMP IE for good and don't look back. People still write exploits that take advantage of IE, because so many use it and there are so many opportunities to nail unsuspecting users. Firefox is built much better, is not quite as much of a memory hog and will prevent many suspected bad sites from loading and causing you problems. It actually warns you when you're coming to a site suspected to have viruses/phishing activity. And there's no learning curve on it...if you are comfortable with IE, Firefox is no problem.

Or, BETTER YET...leave Windoze behind :stretch: and get a Mac. It costs a little more, but if you are an avid computer user, it MORE than pays for itself!!! : app :

Yes. Even though you got your problem fixed, please download Firefox and use that. IE is a nightmare.
